Whats the best i7-965 mb for gaming?

Thread Starter
I got my money, so i'm going to get the I7ee (i7-965) cpu and not sure which motherboard i should get.

I thought i was going to be running 3 cards, but the GTX 295 came out, so i'm asking a question on how many cards I need for that in the Nvidia vid card section. So, what i'm saying is, I don't know if I need 3 slots for cards, or just 2.

But i'm looking for a solid motherboard, with good speed and configurable.

Any suggestions?

You're on the brink of building one helluva system there!

Now is the time to decide how many video cards you plan on installing. You mentioned Tri-SLI as well as Quad-SLI (pair of 295's) but before you make that financial commitment I would check some recent tests of those configurations.

Scaling from one GPU to two is pretty good but two to three is a much narrower gain (at least with the GTX285). Quad-SLI? I haven't touched base on it since somewhere around the 9800GX2 came out but I remember reading threads started by a lot of frustrated and generally unhappy people trying to get it to work properly. It could be better now. If that's the case I'm sure someone will chime in before too long.

Generally tri 285 scales better than two 295s, it definitely is more powerful.

I would hold off until the end of February when the evga classified x58 comes out.

Get yourself 3 gtx 285 and 6gb of ddr3 1600( I like these) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226030

hope that helps.

Also I don't know what your budget is, but some of the new 128gb SSDs are looking pretty nice. Two of those in raid and a 2TB wd for storage would be awesome.

tripple 285's or 280's are better than nvidia sandviches.

and i agree with varjo about the mobo
it will be worth your while
considering your gonna have an extreme edition cpu, you're going to want to OC it (thats really the only reason to get the EE lol)

I'm trying to think of a reason why you'd need more than two 285's, and I cannot think of one.

Seriously, two 285's should be plenty.

haha true, but that's generally not the point with someone who is going for an EEi7 chip. Tri sli (with 285s at least) is all about having the fastest possible system. I mean, no one needs a Ferrari.
