9650M GT Max Temp and Questions

Thread Starter
This video card is part of my laptop.
I want to know what the Max Temperature is. I couldn't find it googling? Probably lack of google skills.

I want to know if it is a good idea to overclock the video card on a laptop. I have never done it before either.

I am doing this for Folding.

The max temp shouldn't be more then for a regular card. Try to stay under 80C for 24/7 use and it should last at least a year.

You make it sound like my video card is going to die very soon. I doubt it would die in a year even if it is used 24/7..

Depends on the temps. Keep them in check and it will last forever.

No one else has any comments? I was suggested to watch temperatures, but if I don't know what temperatures are good, I'm not sure what to do.

And if I were to overclock the video card in my laptop which software should I use? RivaTuner or NVTweak or something like that.

I use GPU-Z to monitor my temps. You can use rivatuner too. I prefer to use rivatuner to overclock, and then ATI tool to test for artifacting and clock speed errors. It works with nvidia cards too... if you didn't already know that. I volt modded my HD 4850 and managed to get it up to 815mhz core clock with that combination of software.

I just ordered that same lappy from newegg on Friday.

Are you sure that OCing the GPU is necessary? The screen has a relatively low res, so it shouldn't push that GPU too hard.

I don't think the 9650's have the same thermal stress issues of the older Nvidia mobile chips, but you will still want to keep it as cool as possible (obviously). If you do need to OC it, I'd say try to keep it under 65c or so, but I'm paranoid.

I guess I won't OC because when I fold it goes to max 65-66-C. This might be not good, because I have been doing it for a while. I guess GPU folding is not necessary. I will slow it down later.

Like I said though, I'm paranoid. The one I ordered won't be used for folding, and it will only have a couple of light games on it since it is for my wife.
