Thanks!

Found this on the av123 forum which suggests the SI t-amp may be the way to go...

it depends on your speakers. the SI T-amp is a steal for the $, but you need pretty sensitive speakers as it just isn't very powerful and don't expect high volumes eve then. I picked up a Gizmo at the introductory price and liked it over the si gen 2 amp. I also liked it over a quick (less than 5 minute) trial with a gainclone.

It's still not really powerful enough to drive my monitors though. I plan to mod mine to hopefully get some more life out of it before I upgrade.

The unfortunate thing about the SI amps are the insane THD at even moderate volume levels - to me, upwards of 10% THD is not acceptable in "hi-fi" gear.

Absolutely, realistically you get about 8w max of good power. The Gizmo is a solid 18wpc at 8ohm.

Also, if there is a better compact 2ch amp (no headphone out necessary) at a similar price, please feel free to share recommendations!

Thx.
I've owned both the Sonic impact t-amp gen 2 and the TCA Gizmo.
The TCA gizmo is far better than the Sonic t-amp for my purposes. I like loud music, sometimes near field listening is good as well, but when i want to get start dancing around in my room or something and want loud music, the TCA Gizmo is there for me.

With the sonic t-amp, it didnt generate enough power for my Onix Reference 0.5s, which resulted in the sound being cutoff/not playing when it started to hit a certain volume.

But for near field, not loud listening the sonic t-amp is the best way to go.
I still would recommend the TCA Gizmo though.

hrmmm all this powering speakers talk has me biting my nails again... I have a big old NAD 2020 PE Power amp, and am scared that it's too much for my X-LS Encores... but I'm probably just being ridiculous... it says it can deliver 250wpc and 400w bridged... but I'm scared for my speakers, I don't want to kill them... in other news will be paying for the Havana tommorrow can't wait to get it

you won't do anything to your speakers unless you are listening a very loud volumes.

Generally, it is not a problem to run speakers above their rated power levels. You very rarely actually will see the full power delivered to speakers. 250w RMS is sort of like saying "250w available should the waveform actually ever require that much power".

My speakers are rated at 80w RMS, but are currently being driven by a power amp rated at 230w with no issues (but they also have 106dB sensitivity so I can be fairly sure I'll never need that much power for reasonable volume levels).

Might be acquiring a 2nd hand pair Audio Techna (spelling?) AD700's to go along nicely with my HD-555's. Heard the 700's will blow them out of the water so i am very very excited about the possibility of me getting some!
