Thanks for the info biggrin.gif, I'll definitely work with the minimax.

Hey everyone! I have recently been contemplating getting seriously into the audio business (business as in hobby, not lucrative endeavor), and have put together through days of research a list of components for my sound system. Here is what I have come up with. For wallet reasons, I'll probably go without the DAC to start with because 1) my new sig rig should have a good enough one built into the motherboard (Realtek ALC898) and 2) I'm curious to see how much of a difference it makes. What do you guys think?

EDIT: Oh, I forgot: I will be wanting a subwoofer ASAP, so I'll buy the amp, speakers, and wire first. Then, once I've saved up enough, I'll buy the DAC and a powered subwoofer. Then, eventually, I can get another pair of P4's and something in the way of a center channel for 5.1 goodness (of course this will mostly be used for stereo music-listenage so I'd want a second pair of speakers anyway). I can always use my Logitech Z523's with the sub turned all the way down for a ghetto center channel. tongue.gif

Feel like the HT receiver is an odd fit for your system. Is this only for computer audio or are you planning on using this for Home Theatre?

I will be using this for computer audio, yes. I picked that amp because it's a good price, has good power output, is 5/7.1 capable (I'd like to get a 5.1 system going because I'll end up with 2 sets of speakers and a sub eventually anyway). Also, according to whathifi.com (who seem to be serious hardasses when it comes to audio quality) say that it's "Musical performance is as enthusiastic as you could wish for at the money." and "Listen via HDMI or, preferably, the Sony’s analogue inputs and the STR-DH820 times very well, unearthing a very respectable level of detail for a product of this type." I figure the combination of audio quality, price, and features is ideal. I have looked into Hi Fi amps quite a bit, and nothing available at this price point seems worth losing some of the capability of this amp. I'm no expert though, so do you have any suggestions?

Haha well I like to know my stuff when it comes to big purchases like this. rolleyes.gif It'll take a little while to save for this (I've gotta build my new computer first!), plus the sub I'm looking at will run me $650. D: In the mean time, I need to start working on my FLAC collection (I guess spending close to $2000 on a speaker system warrants it).

What are your guys' thoughts on speaker wire? As you can see on my list here, I could end up spending close to $300 on speaker wire. You'll notice the Monoprice RCA cables I'd like (and were recommended on some other audio forums). Are there any real differences that you have heard between plain old copper wire and expensive $6/foot wire? If I'm using cheap <$3 RCA cables as a source and they sound good, there's no point in getting expensive speaker wire anyway, as the source would bottleneck it (I assume). Could cheap speaker wire sound worse than the RCA cables, bottlenecking them?

To be honest, I'm not a fan of Monoprice RCA's. Their connectors can have a death grip on some equipment and as for the sound, nothing special there. A notable step above them in sound quality, termination, and for not much more money are Blue Jeans Cable RCA's: http://bluejeanscable.com/store/audio/index.htm and http://bluejeanscable.com/store/6channel/index.htm

As for speaker cable, not a fan of Monoprice either due to their cheap termination. If you're using bare wire(prone to corrosion) or your own termination, it may be ok. Depending on the application, I use Blue Jean's ten or twelve white or Canare 4S11, they all sound great: http://bluejeanscable.com/store/speaker/index.htm But for speaker termination, check out Vampire spades and nanners direct from Vampire or from Sonic Craft(currently on sale). Their spades are gold plated copper and nanners are brass with a high copper content, both can be crimped or soldered and are very cheap for what you're getting.

Is there any reason not to get banana plugs from BJC? I can get all I will need for 18 bucks.

So I've gone ahead and ordered a Lepai 2020A+ for my computer, now comes the speaker selection. I'm thinking about 8" x 12" x 8" would be about the max size I would want since I do plan to move around with them. I'm looking for some great full-range bookshelfs that can provide enough bass for listening pleasure in a small room about 8' x 8'. I don't need any super heavy bass, just enough that I can enjoy music without needing to add a sub-woofer. I'm looking to spend less then $200 after shipping to Canada. Around $100 - $140 for the speakers would be a pretty decent target.

I'm open to recommendations slightly above that if you really think it's worth it on this small amp.
