16:10 = Illogical

Thread Starter
Me and a friend were having an argument as to whether 16:10 screens should even be mainstream for gamers these days. It seems the norm now that games are being made for both consoles and PC and as a result, some do not come in 16:10 resolutions. And while some do, I would argue that the need to change the resolution to one that does not have any inherent benefit is inefficient. Furthermore, almost all TV shows these days come in 720p which will letterbox on the conventional wide screen.

Having owned a 16:9 display, I don't think I could ever watch a TV show on any other monitor, but the choice in the market is very disappointing. I must say however that the BenQ I currently have is exquisite (do not get the 24", it's bad).

16:10 may offer 120 more pixels in the vertical direction, but according to me, ultimately if you wanted to view documents and the like, a 4:3 screen is much more preferable.

What do you think?

I don't agree with the "viewing document" thing. Open Office is two papers wide on my 24" 16:10 and it's very nice for doing work.

well as for the letterboxing argument... most retail DVD movies have letterboxing regardless of screen ratio.

does it really matter though? 16:10 or 16:9 i don't really care so long as the resolution is STANDARDISED

I think monitors should switch to 16:9 and they kind of are. I know you get a little less space, but you will become used to it. I like 16:9 because if you hook up a PS3/360 or have a TV Tuner then watching HDTV on your monitor you won't get any black bars or stretched pixels. It is just personal preference and I don't mind 16:9 or 16:10 but I would choose 16:9 over it just for that reason.

Any decent 1920x1200 monitor will have adjustments for a 1080p image (letterboxing instead of stretching) so that's really not a problem.

As for documents... I prefer my 1920x1200 to my old 1600x1200 or 1280x1024 by far. For word documents, it stretches out more, for more 'static' documents (ones that don't stretch) you can stack a couple on the screen or set it in pages.

The 1920x1200 was made before the 1920x1080 but since a TV don't have the control panel at the bottom the resolution was reduced (I think)

16:10 should be the one and only ratio 16:9 is useless according to me.
4:3>5:4
16:10>4:3

When you have a wide panel you have so much more room for work when you have multiple windows or apps.

Lot of replies incoming. But I like 16:10, the vertical space is very nice for the stuff that I and many others do. Just because some people don't care for it, such as you, doesn't mean its illogical and shouldn't be around. Just..don't buy those monitors. Really doesn't matter in the end.

With the document issue I was meaning it more in terms of if the wideness of the screen was bothering you that much.

16:9 doesn't bother me at all, I don't see the problem with either of them. /shrug

I don't think you're going to get too many passionate "DOWN WITH 16:10! 16:9 IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO!" people around here. Yeah, probably a couple...

I think it's all a bunch of crap. Why make TVs/monitors one aspect ratio, and DVDs/Blu rays in a different ratio, causing letterboxing? I don't want a theatrical experience, I want the movie to fill my screen. Damn directors!
