Look a (bad) TRUE clone!

Just kidding, but honestly, I've seen a few TRUE copies out there for about half the price of a TRUE that only gain you a couple of degrees off of the TRUE.

LOL, considering that a TRUE120 weighs 790g / 1.75lbs on it's own, I wouldn't doubt that it could break a motherboard if it was mounted poorly enough. Here are some additional tips/considerations...

1. the mounting screws "bottom out" so when your mounting the thing, make sure you turn them all the way until they stop.
2. however, always, whenever mounting anything - be-it a tire on a car or a heatsink on your motherboard - always tighten the screws equally in a cross-star pattern.
This means after you've gotten the screw set in their treads a little bit, turn each one a equal amount of turns, in an alternating pattern. Upper-left x 3 turns then lower-right 3 turns then lower-left x 3 turns and finally upper-right x 3 turns...and repeat until the screws are all bottomed out to ensure equal pressure is applied as you're tightening them down...

3. If you can spring for the extra $35-40 USD, the IFX-10 Backside Cooler comes with one of the best mounting plates for use in conjunction with the TRUE120 but it's up to you if you'd want to spring for almost $100 USD in cooling products for your CPU alone. If you're not going to be overclocking the bejesus out of your processor you might not need it but it doesn't seem like they sell that specific mounting plate without it.

Might be worth an email to their support staff to see if they'll part with one individually though. Or try Gary Stofer over at sidewindercomputers.com, he's been really good at getting me random odds and ends from ThermalRight when I've needed them - including my current (discontinued) HR-03 PLUS when no one else could.

----
Hope some of that helps, I'm a huge fan of the TRUE120, even if they sometimes need a little lapp-job to show their real brilliance... ;-p

Thanks for the advice, and yes I know about the cross-tightening. I learned that from a young age and it's just like second nature now.

So what is so great about that mounting plate? Is the one provided not sufficent?

I have a Zalman 9800, and am very satisfied with it so far, maybe once I start overclocking I'll have to change, but so far it's great for me. idle 30°C load 42-47°C depending on the fan speed. Most off the time I have it turning at 1200 rpm, to keep the noise as low as possible.

Get a TRUE and lap it. You will be able to pull 3.6Ghz with ease and 3.8Ghz if you get lucky.

I'd add the Sunbeam core contact to the list. Tests put it on par with the TRUE, it costs less, might be worth a shot.

TRUE + a couple hours of elbow grease and some sandpaper
or
a Xigmatek s1283 or equiv(you'll probably want to pick up the bolt-thru kit for it), especially if you're on a budget.

The Noctura (I'm gonna screw up the model code) NH12UP is jsut as good or better than the TRUE and doesn't need to be lapped for good performance. It even comes w/ a decent fan. It is more expensive tho.

The intel mounting system on it sucks

I'd grab an OCZ Vendetta 2
