Worth Folding?

Thread Starter
I've got a rig available that just needs a hard drive and an OS and I'm thinking about setting it up to fold. Its a Pentium 4 HT @ 3 GHz (I think) And has 512mb ram. Nothing but onboard video as well. My question is would it be worth it to have this as a folding rig? Around how many ppd would I get? Also I would like to use linux on it. Is there any distribution that is better or recommended for just folding? Thanks.

You could try OCNnix as your distro.
I think it was made for folding, been awhile since I looked at it though.

As for your PPD, I couldn't see you cranking out more than 1000ppd. Tops.

Any folding you do is worth the help, regardless of the points.

There is a point where you should just save the money from electricity that it will use and put that towards hardware that will have much better ppd/$.

If you don't pay the electricity or your parents don't, then by all means, fold on.

Download windows 7 Beta, get a key, free os. Grab a used 8800GS/8800GT/9600GT for little money and bam, decent little GPU folding rig. If you like this idea and cannot get an OS, there is a linux GPU with linux folding guide here somewhere.

Linky

That's my .02.

Although it just dawned on me probably no PCIe slot. Doh!

Even if you cannot do that with a linux distro that would probably work well as a cheap little folder. It would probably get about the same Points per day as a PS3. Just a thought.

I have always heard that P4s get under 100ppd. Not really worth it. I like the 8800GS idea much better.

From what I gather CPU folding isnt really worth it as far as points are concerned. If I were you I'd get a 8800GS/GT or a 9600GSO/GT and fold.
I think Frys just had a sale on 9600 GSO 768 mb for 49.99 after MIR. Look around I bet youll be able to find some sweet deals.

As for folding any help no matter how many points you get is worth the help.

FOLD ON!

I was getting 400 ppd with a p4 @4GHz. I imagine 3GHz would yield ~300ppd. I think it is still worth it because every little bit helps.
