avast is acting funny

my friends notebook crapped out so he got a new hdd and an external enclosure to pull the files off his old drive. to be safe, i plugged the drive into my comp and from my computer, right clicked the drive and told avast to do a scan. it hung at 5% for an awful long time and i noticed that it was scanning a path that didn't exist...anywhere on my computer or on his harddrive. it even found a "sign of malware" so i told it to repair it, and i think it did...

im trying to do a second scan, but already its hanging at 22% and saying its scanning filepaths that don't exist.

help

It may be scanning "hidden" or system directories.
Why it's hanging? it may be large files....
You could try scanning with another anti-virus program.

yeah i was trying to figure out how to view hidden folders in vista but this it what's weird: my friend and i both use vista, so you and i know that vista doesn't use a "Documents and Settings" folder, it uses a "Users" folder, right? well the path where avast found a virus was

H:\\Documents and Settings\\Nathan\\....somethingsomething...
(H is his harddrive via enclosure)

my friends name is DANNY, I'm named nathan, but i've never touched his computer before today. and he shouldn't even have a docs and settings folder on a vista drive anyways, right?

EDIT: the files it says that its scanning aren't on the drive i told it to scan. (or anywhere on the computer for that matter)
how is AVG? ive never used

The "Nathan" instead of "Danny" is weird......
It might be from the hard drive just being attached to your computer or a glitch in AVAST.

I can explain the documents and settings thing.
It is left over from your friend who *most likely* upgraded to vista from XP

EDIT: AVG should be fine. There is also a couple other Anti-viruses that you could try if AVG does not work.

I found a way to view system files in vista..

Quote:
1. Click the round blue Start thing in the left corner
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Folder Options
4. Click the View tab
5. Click Show hidden files and folders
6. If you want to see system files as well, unclick Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
7. Click OK
