Good to see AMD back again.

Although I think they would be better off competing for the "bang for buck" market, instead of trying to compete with Intel's top CPUs in the performance wars.

I sense a Tri-Core system coming this summer once prices have dropped even more

Nice to see a AMD processor performing that well. But they are still atleast 1 generation behind Intel. Hope things will even out by next gen.

I've gotta say... a 3.5ghz AMD is ~a 3.0GHz i7 in gaming.

That's 15% slower IPC for the AMD. If you figure 6.5GHz (the highest benchable I've seen on an AMD) that's about equal to a 5.6Ghz I7... which happens to be about the fastest benchable i7 I've seen.

What you said is not even close to the truth

You know, the Phenom X3 720 is good CPU, but let us not make them look better than they are.

In gaming, E8400 performed better in 2 out of the 4 games benchmarked. In Media encoding and editing, E8400 performed better in 4 out of 6 benchmarks. And in Image processing, the E8400 performed better overall. In 3D modeling and rendering, they performed neck to neck.

So, you are overstating the performance of 720 by claiming that it performs better in almost all cases !

if you were reading the article, it clearly owned the e8600 in all games except hl2, and the core i7 920 except crysis. of course there's no way a $145 cpu would win against a $1000 i7 965 and $1500 qx9700. but winning against the mentioned cpus is definately a slap on their faces.

I'm really glad I convinced my friend to go AMD instead of a lame-ass E5200. He'll love the X3 720 BE.

Darn it...the 720 is so tempting. I like my 9950, does its job well enough, but the power consumption issue bothers me.

Did you even look at techreport review ?

E8400 outperformed 720 in Crysis and HL2. And in Far Cry 2 they performed on par. Did you see that ? They only benchmarked 4 games

E8600 outperformed 720 in Crysis, HL2 and Far Cry 2, Did you see that ? The only game it performed worse was UT3, but both CPUs had higher than 100 FPS, so you won't notice the difference

E8400 got only 0.1 fps less than 720 in far cry 2, but had higher min FPS.

UT3 is the only game that was really better on 720, though you won't notice the difference when the fps is 100+
