Intel definitely does NOT want AMD gone. There is no doubt about that.

If AMD goes under, then Intel becomes a de facto monolopy. This will restrict them from expanding into new markets. As long as AMD is around (even if reduced in size), Intel can claim it is not a monolopy and have leeway to expand.
Once again...

Once core 2 dies off amd will have cornered the sub $200 market, which makes up the vast majority of the sales
You really think Intel would let Core2 die off before they have a new budget alternative ready to go? Cummon, Intel ain't that stupid

even if amd goes under, via still makes CPUs, so intel wouldn't be a monopoly.

The behavior AMD cites in their anti-trust filings says that Intel seems to be trying very hard. Not to say it's good for them, but they want AMD to be very far down and weak.

Intel's next "budget" alternative is Core i5, which only OEMs are going to touch. They are hardware locked at stock speeds, which if the engineering samples are any indication of will be in the 2.1-2.5GHz range.

Everything I've seen indicates that Intel thinks we will willingly spend $200+ on a motherboard and $250+ on a CPU. Some people may be willing to buy into that, but I spent a total of $180 on my CPU and motherboard, and I get within 5% of the FPS of practically any user on this forum.

AMD has been doing the exact opposite for a few years now. Rather than restrict and exploit, AMD has embraced the enthusiast with things like its cpu overclocking tool. The only thing that has prevented me from switching is overclocking. Deneb solved that. Chances are my next CPU will be an AMD Phenom II X3.

If they gave SLi exclusivity to AMD; AMD would be Crossifre & SLi capable. That would be a major selling point for AMD CPUs and would reduce the amount of $ from intels troths.
Intel is probably betting on the success of the Lucid Hydra technology, so even if Nvidia withdraw their SLI license, they would still have some multi-gpu tech.

I thought this "un-ocability" was just a rumor proven false... and anyways, how many people even OC? While this may be good for AMD in the budget enthusiast sector (since extreme guys always find a way to get a shiny i7 or something), for general public it (unfortunately for AMD) doesn't matter all that much, since most stock computers (and most CPUs are sold through OEM's) can't be OCed anyways.

there was a rumor that the i7 920 and 940 wouldn't be able to overclock, maybe that's the rumor you are thinking of.

A very wise duck we have here
The same thoughts came to mind when I first saw the news reports of this.

Weren't they going to be rigged to default back to the default speed settings .... that way the only OCable CPU would be marketed like the AMD "Black Box" line of "unlocked" items but with an Intel Premium price!

Wow, Nvidia FINALLY lets intel have SLI, and how does intel repay them? By suing them.

God I hate that company.
