So, how does renaming the Mirror's Edge executable to 3dmark06 make it run faster?

Thread Starter
I suppose it works with apps other than Mirror's Edge, but still - I read in another thread that renaming the executable magically made it run faster. Makes about as much sense as using UV-reactive fan connectors to lose 50C .

But, I'm the one asking.

No it won't. But setting the app's priority to 'high' will. I gained about 300 3dmark06 by doing that; You will also see some time shaved off for super pi as well.

The renaming of a new game's executable to another game's only applies for those which don't yet have a Catalyst profile. Prior to Catalyst 9.1, I had to rename Mirror's Edge to 3dmark06.exe to get decent performance on my 4870x2. But really, a proper profile is much, much better. I get +30fps or so using the proper profile on the 9.1's, than "hacking" it by renaming the executable.

If you have a single-GPU card, then I don't suppose renaming the exe will do you any good.

It allows the game that lacks it's own Crossfire profile to use another game's profile, thus allowing it to utilize all GPU's of a multi-GPU setup instead of just one.

Ah... I see. Well, thanks. Doesn't Mirror's Edge already support multi-GPU configs, though?

Well yes, but it still requires a proper Catalyst profile in order to fully utilize multiple ATI GPU's. The 9.1 drivers include it.
