I would consider myself the reigning connoisseur of IEM/earbuds as I've owned damn near everything under the 120$ mark for IEM/earbuds, and sampled most 200$+ ones, and I''ll tell you the FX66 is the best bang for the buck I've have [it has tons of bass, some people this isn't for]. Short of the ER6i's and the Yuin Pk3/2, I've probably sampled it. :]

Alright, so, here's my set up proposal: I'm going to buy the FX66's for walkabout listening, and the ATH-AD700's for home use. Sound good for an audiophile virgin?

I'm no audiophile but i just got a set of FX66s last week and they are amazing. They fit really nice and have really good sound. Totally worth it.

Music is not actually supposed to be listened to in 7 channels. Listen to something in stereo once and you'll hear how it was intended to be heard. People spend so much on home stereo systems (I've got over 10K in my theater) and don't think twice. A good set of headphones and an amp can be had for 1/10th of a nice 5.1 system and sound much better for music. Try it, and you will be surprised.

Looking at the specs, these really don't look much better than the FX66's. The frequency range is, in fact, smaller than the FX66's. The db rate is only about 5 more.

I don't believe looking at specs helps for picking headphones. I believe the best thing is to see what other people have to say or to test them yourself.

I agree. Studio specific stuff can have a wider frequency range, but can sound like crap. For example my AKG K55.
