EP45-U3DP and E8400 overclocking help? New to this...

Thread Starter
Hi Everyone,

Well I have been reading everywhere on overclocking and I guess I am just not getting it. I have the components listed in the sig rig and started by moving the CPU Host Freq in MIT from the 333 to 345 and the Clock ratio at 9. This was the only setting that worked for me without not being able to boot. I have LLC off as recommended by Robilar in the U3DP thread. I also have CIA2 disabled as well.

I am attempting to just get a minor overclock to 3.2 to 3.4 on the system so that I can run it effectively and perhaps increase my folding PPD count. I am just a bit lost and am quite frankly overwhelmed by the configurations folks are using and the voltages being tweaked. I won't even claim to comprehend the memory timings yet.

So....if anyone could help me out I certainly would appreciate it. I do not want to use the Easytune6 as I believe that setting things up in the BIOS is the way to go. At least it will give me a better understanding of things.

Thanks a bunch for any assistance....it is certainly appreciated!

Regards,

up fsb til you run into problems. set fsb dram ratio to 1;1. lock the pci to 100mhz. increase vcore voltage if instability accours. increase motherboard or fsb voltage and even memory voltage if unstable. good luck

Bradley,

FSB highest was 345. Unsure how to set the ratio of 1:1. PCI is already locked at 100mhz. Will check on the Vcore.

let me point you in the right direction and give you some pointers:

http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...ing-guide.html

So if you are going for say 4.0GHz, you will need a 445 FSB. That means you will also have to set your ram divider down so as not to push it to far. So try setting the ram SPD to 2.00B. Set the NB voltage. 1.20v, PLL to 1.54v and FSB Termination (VTT) to 1.26v. Your bios vcore setting is higher then the actual due to voffset. So set it to 1.3625v (actual as shown by CPU-Z should be around 1.35v). That should get you were you want to be assuming you can even get 4.0GHz at that vcore. There is a setting in bios called loadline calibration which should keep the vcore from dropping when the CPU is put under load, but dont use it for 45nm CPUs as it can damage them. Also make sure to disable SpeedStep and C1E in CPU configuration to prevent it from downclocking to x6 when at idle.

Now this is only a basic idea of what you are trying to do. But you might be better off going for 3.8GHz with a 423 FSB.

Watch temps at all times!

EricEod,

The link does not go to anything but the home page for me. Still trying to decipher the in's/out's of the BIOS. I do not want to push the machine at 4.0ghz in the interest of not frying anything out yet....looking at baby steps for now until I get a better understanding of things.

EDIT: EricEOD,

I set the SPD to 2.0 and nothing else. I was able to go to a 378x9 for a 3400MHz speed and am running the Orthos test right now. Perhaps it was the way I had the memory set up that caused me to not be able to get above 345 before? Temps are so far so good sitting between 36 and 38...not much different at all in RealTemp as compared to idle.

Yeah, I figured the memory divider (SPD) was the problem.

Thanks Eric! Still learning on this end...as far as the linky....I have been over and over that thread more times in the past 3 weeks...

I am brand new to this so the info is all a bit overwhelming, heck I have a notebook with notes to specific posts on things I find helpful!

Certainly appreciate the help....BTW....are you or were you a USAF guy?

Hi Guys, I'm glad I came across this thread as you can see in my system specs I have the same system, but I don't have it yet, I am ordering it either this weekend or next. I have been doing my homework and I have been on the OC scene for a while, but always with AMD and now going Intel and I never really did get into serious OC'ing with AMD, so this thread is perfect
