OC GTX 260 in Ubuntu - nvclock

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I am trying to OC my GTX 260 in Ubuntu, and so far with coolbits enabled, nvidia-settings does not do anything to the card. The card is recognized fine. I tried downloaded and installed the latest nvclock (0.8 beta4) and ran it. It shows error of "X not loaded"

Code:
 # nvclock -b coolbits -n 700.000 -m 1250.000
Error:
Can't switch to the Coolbits backend because X isn't loaded
I do not understand it well. If I understand it correctly, X means Xorg? and because I have gnome desktop, x should be loaded already. Am I missing something? Please help.

Thanks,

D.

Look at this http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=126275

Its not the same error, but it seems there is a problem with the lastest nvidia drivers with coolbits. Try using an older nvidia driver.

Thanks Purdueman, but unfortunately I am using 177.82 driver, not the latest one, and it seems that coolbits is broken too.

I wonder if I have the card recognized correctly, but it does show up fine in sysinfo as well as nvidia-settings. I can also play with compiz 3D a lot. Weird!

Anybody has any other idea?

Thanks,

D.

You can overclock with nvidia-settings if you add this in the Device section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Code:
Option "Coolbits" "1"
imxp nvclock hasn't ever worked very well

Thanks Gauvenator, but I did it already when I stated it in the first post

The option for overclocking shows up, but it does not let me apply the speed or memory that I want to change. Regardless of what I enter in those fields and click Apply, the stock values (576 for clock and 999 for memory) are applied for the card (it shows that in the status bar of nvidia-settings). It seems to me that coolbits does not do anything to my card.

Anybody ever seen this situation before?

Thanks,

D.

You have to run as SUDO to actually apply the settings. Have you done that?

Yes, I did. I also restart several times to see if it helps, but it does not.

There is a bug I've noticed with the nvidia-settings where it will only oc the first time you click apply, but any changes after that don't work. Next time you start X you can change it one more time again...I'm not sure why this happens.

wine can be tricky to get working, but linux native games work really well. etqw, doom3, ut2k4 are some i have installed. tf2 works well in wine just in dx8.1 mode lol...otherwise performance is lacking.
