brands I would look at:
Marantz, Denon, HK, NAD, Onkyo
Hey, thanks. I don't really want to upconvert any signals;
HDMI switching would be nice, tho the only HDMI device I have is an outdated vidcard;
basic switching would be nice. I guess HDMI upconversion would be convenient so I wouldn't have to select/change input on the TV. Good questions for me to ask myself--I will use this stuff to reduce my noobness whilst shopping.

When it comes to speakers- check out av123.com , and then check the forums. People sell stuff for much cheaper on there, and the speakers/items are usually in great condition.
Right! That's the idea, I think. Thanks for the heads-up on av123.com. I'll check it out.
