Hd3850 agp

Thread Starter
My old card was a 7600gs agp and I did alot of research and I decided to get the ATI hd3850. When I installed the card I saw barley any increase, if none in all of my games. I ran the CSS video stress test and I did see about a 13fps increase, but shouldn't it be so much more? I know that I have a single core cpu and all of the agp benchmarks, the cpus they used were moslty worse than mine, yet they seem to be getting better results.
Could this be a severe bottleneck from the cpu or agp slot?

Also, once I installed the ATI catalyst drivers (9.1) I noticed that a few of my apps stopped working, (ati tool, pc mark 06) and I get an error message when trying to play call of duty 1 "Cannot open OpenGL. Make sure you have your manufacturer's latest graphics drivers". I have looked all around and it seems that the only answer is to update the video drivers, ad about 80% of the time this error happened with ATI cards...

Anyone have any clue what may be going on here?

You have a CPU bottleneck your P4 is not fast enough to keep your HD 3850 pushed, also roll back to the 8.12 they are a lot better for HD 3850 i found.

Hope this helps also overclocking your CPU might help a lot

I have already tried overclocking my cpu, and when I got to about 3.1ghz there were a noise coming from the cpu area (pretty sure it wasn't the cpu itself), and then it would crash when in games...

Use the hotfix drivers from the sapphire website 8.1 or 9.2 - the AGP 3850's prefer it I did and mine's fine and fast on a P4 at 3.56GHZ, (sapphiretech dot com )

You might want to uninstall you existing ATI drivers completely first and run drivercleaner after - then install the hotfix drivers.

Your P4 probably won't reach beyond 3.1 because of the biostar MB and also cos
you have 4 sticks of RAM - you might do better with 2 x 1GHZ of PC3500 or above.

Good luck!

when i had the 3850 and a p4 3ghz, i scored 5k on 3dmark06. when i bought a agp and duo core MB and installed a e6600, with the same card i got 10k. here is to show you the bottleneck you will get.

I will agree that the P4 is a bottleneck, but alot of that score would be from a newer cpu. I know that an E6600 did not add 5k points but I would say the 5k could be half and half?

Wow that cpu score was less than I thought. That P4 is a huge hit. This does prove one thing, agp has enough bandwidth. The 3850 scores 10,200 on my rig and others have similar scores.
