PCI card for a 3rd monitor?

Thread Starter
Well I'm currently running dual monitors...a 15" and a 20", and I have some extra desk space to my right so I was thinking of putting another monitor there...I've seen a few 15" LCDs for very cheap, but my main concern is getting another (PCI or PCI 1x) videocard that will play nice with my 9800GT.

Is anybody running a setup like this? Will just any Nvidia card work? Pretty much the only two options I see would be a 6200 ($50), or an FX 5200 ($35) from EVGA.

...That or get a new motherboard with multiple x16 slots and a better card for more desktops and to also FOLD MOAR...but I don't think I have the money for that...

A video card that runs off the same drivers is the most likely to play nice.

You can get something even cheaper for a 15 inch monitor. Maybe a MX400 series card. If you want to do any DVD watching though, then I think a 8400gs is probably your best bet.

many people have found that it does matter. running multiple video drivers usually ends up in conflicts

check the release notes for the driver your primary card uses. pick a pci card in the list of cards the driver is compatible with. in the release notes for the current nvidia driver (182.06), everything from the 6100 up is supported.

I bought the eVGA FX 5200 from Newegg for a third monitor (22") back in the day and it worked perfectly with my 8800GTS 320MB. It worked so well that I even tried to overclock the little thing... don't do that. That's like putting a V8 engine on a Razor scooter... cool if it can be done, but sadly, it didn't handle it very well.

Anyways, the 5200 is an excellent little card. Don't expect to be playing games on it, but any thing else should work very well.

Just a note.... the 5-series cards do not run on the same Vista driver as the 6,7,8,9,GTX200 series.

If you have x1 PCIe slot, you can get a cheap 8400GS/9400GT and make an adapter: http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...e-adapter.html
Once again...
