9600gt vs hd3870 - Page 2

Using crysis alone as a benchmark, especially for SLI, is a terrible idea. Crysis is notorious for poor crossfire scaling, and Crysis was made with nvidia cards and their strenths stronly in mind. It is even in there intro. The 9600gt is the equivalent to a 8800gt, which beats out the 3870 most of the time. The performance is close, especially with 512mb V ram GDDR4 version. I would go for the 9600gt because it still performs better and has a lot of room to OC.

According to TomsHardware, they're about the same. Game dependent in the end. Boils down to which company you like more, ATI or Nvidia.

There are other benchies in that article other than Crysis. You have to go to the next page.

You're probably safe going with the 9600GT.

If it's an MSI open box, you should probably just get the new 3870. Although I like MSI's customer support (for instance tonight I sent them a question and then sent me back with brand new BIOS in 2 minutes!), a new card is probably safer.

The 9600GT is a step down from a 8800GT, approx. 10% less in frame rates in games, some even more.

I too would go with the 3870. It's an amazing overclocking card and performs very well for the price.
