Recompiling Bootfloppy.img

Thread Starter
Basically I have a laptop I'm trying to run DSL and/or DSL-N on. The cd and hard disk are both shot. I have working usb ports and floppy. The laptop is about 14 years old and has no option for usb booting. I had downloaded a bootfloppy.img file and successfully forced usb boot.

Upon some research, I've found that the main kernel boots from the floppy and the system runs off the usb. The problem I'm having is that the bootfloppy.img (specifically I'm using the bootfloppy-usb.img) file found on DSL-wiki is compiled with the 2.4.26 kernel whereas the files on my usb is 2.6.12 kernel. Whenever I run something that requires certain modules, such as modprobe, terminal searches for the modules.dep in the 2.4.26 kernel because that's what's loaded, when in reality 2.6.12 is what exists.

I'm wondering if anyone has "upgraded" the kernel in either bootfloppy.img or bootfloppy-usb.img before or if it's even possible. If there's even a way I can compile my own boot image file, I'm always up for learning.

Thanks
Laptop

a light bulb just went off somewhere in my head... Is the bootfloppy.img file that I'm burning to the floppy using rawwritewin basically the same boot.img file I can find on the CD/ in the ISO file?
