Again, apples and oranges. GDDR3 != GDDR5. Without getting too technical, GDDR5 provides double I/O throughput compared to GDDR3. Meaning, 1GB GDDR5 on a 256 bit bus allows for roughly the same throughput as 1GB GDDR3 on a 512 bit bus.

the reason the memory bus bandwidth matters, is because your video card has to be able to read all the data in memory before it can complete a frame. if your memory can't read all that data just as fast or faster than the GPU can render the image, then it becomes a hindrance instead of a help.

That's not the case for graphics cards where the memory is constantly being read/written to in very short time periods. The limit is not how much RAM you can access, but how quickly you can access it. With a wider bus, you can access more RAM in the same time period. The concern is not addressing the RAM, but accessing more in a short time period (for more textures/shaders/data at higher resolutions). There's a difference when talking about a bit interface for addressing RAM vs. a bit interface for utilizing all the RAM during a given cycle. I see your point, but the bit interface DOES determine how fast you can read/write to a block of memory. Think of it this way--since no card comes with close to 4GB of on-board memory, why don't manufacturers use a 32-bit memory interface? Because you can't cram enough data through the 32-bit interface in a given amount of time to render each frame with the data required. So you go to a wider bus. It's not a quantity of memory addressing issue.

It's not irrelevant. In the case for the HD4870 1GB vs. 512MB versions, the 256-bit bus was wide enough for the speed of the GPU and memory--so going to a higher bus wasn't necessary. Let's say a 2GB card is released. Would the same 256-bit bus work? I don't know--doubt many people do, but not necessarily since it depends on how much data needs to be transferred in the given data cycle. 256-bits might not be wide enough. It does matter.

What? He never mentioned GDDR3 in the first place. The 4870 1GB performs better than 4870 512MB, even though the bus width and memory speed is exactly the same. So the extra 512MB certainly is being used.
