E8400. Then overclock it to a million zillion ghz....or maybe around 4ghz

Its the cheapest out of the C2D which are still the best option for gaming these days. You said your not doing any encoding so the the Quad will just be for bragging rights tbh but if you have the cash go for it!

My vote is the E8400.

You do have a Q6600 though dude. That cpu is STILL awesome. Bang that thing up to 3.5ghz ish and you won't need to upgrade haha.

If I was getting a new processor now, at this very moment, I'd take Quad over Core2Duo.

But you won't regret taking any of those E8x00, as they are flawless.

It's all up to you and your budget. With such a choice, you can't make a mistake, that's the main point.

The best value in your list is e8400 or e8500. e8600 is good but pricy. If you upgrade path is relatively short such as 6-9 months. E8xxx is the way to go. Otherwise, give a thought on quad like q9550.
E8400 E8500 is plenty. Best price/performance in gaming however as i have said before 4.0Ghz Quad is just pure 1337
