cable select settings in Samsung spinpoint harddrive.

Was going to install it as a secondary drive in a system that has sata harddrives allready in place. The hd already has xp installed on it. if i try to put that this sata system will it try to boot on it's own if i use cable select or will the system boot normally since i have a sata drive installed in the slot 1 sata spot? Also, what jumper settings do i need to use if I just want to put the drive in there as secondary? The reason I'm doing this is because I'm extracting the drive from another computer that has a shot motherboard and I got important family pictures and documents I want to keep. Once I get everything off there I need, I will format the drive but I need another pc to access this stuff off here first. And if i do use cable select, where should the jumper be? Or should I slave it. Actually I know the jumper settings but still unsure which one I should use. I checked samsung website for the different jumper points.

Putting it as primary or secondary only relates to were the HDD is on the IDE cable. So the only reason you would be putting it to the slave setting (secondary) is if it is being connected to the middle connector on the cable. But if it is the only HDD on the IDE cable, connect it at the end and put the jumper at either CS (Cable Select) or Master.

As for the HDD booting, just make sure the SATA device is the first in the boot order in bios and you willl be fine. Worst case, you can press F8 at boot and select a boot device. So just select the SATA HDD to boot from.

As for were to position the jumper, it is different among drive manufacturers. So you need to provide what the HDD is, and or check their website.

Edit: Here is a link with different manufacturer jumper settings:

ok cool. Thanks for the quick reply. Just didn't want to corrupt anything. Si I set the jumper settings to cable select and it will boot as a secondary drive. Will do.

The motherboard guide says the the bios automatically boots from sata 1 first but i will check in there just to make sure. Thin I remembered that when I checked the bios during building the system.

Yes you sould be able to just set it to cable select. But if for some reason the HDD isnt being read, and it is at the end connection (not the middle one on the IDE), you can set it to master (or single drive).
