What is response time?

Warning this is a noob question, brace yourself:

What is response time, and how does it effect my picture quality?

From the name I would expect it to be something similar to refresh rate. Is that true or is this totally unrelated.

Response Time is how long it takes a screen/monitor to go from Black to White to Black (BTB). It is calculated in ms. It doesn't effect the quality of the picture but how fast the image appears on the screen. BUT you have to be carefull. When you look around some would say 2ms. Most screens are 5ms. The ones that say 2ms are almost always GTG (Gray to Gray).

It is the time it takes for an LCD pixel to change from completely active black to inactive white then back again.

Be careful though, many manufacturers report their times from their gray to gray or color to color tests.

In the real world, really slow response times will give streaking or ghosting when stuff changes rapidly on the screen (like in a game or particularly fast moving object in a video).

Thanks for the info.

Its crazy this just goes to prove with monitors, companies try to confuse you with a flurry of specs. Thats why I always go look at a monitor no matter what its specs are.

Keeping in mind, for still images, it really won't affect image quality. But of course, video quality/games will be affected by long response times (long delays suck)

Yeah, good idea. My pet peeve is monitor manufacturers using dynamic contrast ratio as opposed to true contrast ratio.

response time is a more relevant spec than refresh rate when looking at an LCD monitor's performance and tendency to ghost. Though as noted above, manufacturers lie. There are software & web based programs that can find actual response time, which is usually notably higher than manufacturer's specs... that's where good research comes in when buying a new monitor.
