Analog Cables for X-Fi Titanium?

Thread Starter
I own a Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion soundcard. Currently, I connect it to my AVR (Sony DG-STR920) with a 25-foot optical cable. This requires me to run either the Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect encoders to achieve 5.1 channel surround sound over optical.

I do not like using these encoders because they introduce a 50ms latency to the audio output, which I find to be a bit too long. Dialog often seems a little off.

In order to correct this, I need to find a suitable analog audio cable. The card has 1/8" connectors for FL+FR, SL+SR, Center+LFE(sub), and SRL+SRR. My AVR has an 8-channel analog audio input which takes 8 individual RCA connections.

This means the cable I need has to be [4x 1/8" stereo to 8x RCA]. The closest I have found is either four sets of [1x 1/8" stereo to 2x RCA], or a [8x 1/4" mono to 8x RCA] mated with four [2x 1/4" mono to 1x 1/8" stereo] adapters. Either of these solutions is very clunky.

I need help.

I know that Creative offers a home-theater cable which is pretty close to what I need but I have zero information on this cable. I need to know the length, and would also like to know the gauge of the wire used.

As far as I know optical is is the best way to connect toa sounds system, you will get better sound clarity. So if you use analog wouldn't the quality go down?

Not exactly.

Optical avoids RF-interference which can be caused by the 60Hz AC Mains power. RCA and other unbalanced analog audio cables (1/4" mono, 1/8" mono, 1/8" stere) are subject to RF-interference, but generally, this is not experienced unless the analog audio cables are extremely long (or run right across a Mains transformer). A more complete explanation requires a background in the physics of electrical connection (basically, the unbalanced cables act like an antenna, and the longer the cables are, the more RF-interference they pick up, especially at 60Hz because it is so common).

Optical can only support 2 channels PCM uncompressed. In order to achieve more channels, some form of encoded audio stream has to be used, none of which are lossless. (Audio over HDMI can support up to 8 channels of uncompressed PCM, but not optical) The two standard streams are Dolby Digital and DTS, but these formats are generally encoded prior to playback. They were developed for DVD. My sound card can encode either Dolby Digital or DTS on the fly, but when it does, it introduces a 50ms latency as the encoding requires CPU-cycles. There is no way to remove this latency. You either notice it or don't. I notice it and it bothers me.

Sorry for the delay.

The Amp does not have 1/8 jacks, but my sound card does. The amp has an analog audio in which supports 8-channels by way of 8 RCA jacks, one for each channel. I currently only need 5.1 but I'd like to have a complete 8-channel set for potential upgrade room in the future.

here is the Creative version... doesn't seem to say length
http://us.creative.com/products/prod...=Product%20Img

You could call them and ask as it will likely be the cheapest solution.

Do you really need 25'? most mini-RCA IC's don't come in lengths longer than about 6'. You could order custom ones, but that would be expensive. blue jeans will make them, but they want $76 each plus shipping. A no frills mini-RCA could be made for quite a bit less... but you're still looking at 100' of cable if you use a quad configured cable with shield (highly recommended for that distance) so you're looking at a pretty penny for the cable. My choice would be Mogami quad for a budget application. For something better, Cardas... but that retails for about $8/ft
