Help me oc my 9950BE 125W :D

Thread Starter
I would LOVE to be able to achieve 3.5ishGhz because I think my cooler can handle it. (OCZ Vendetta 2). But I can't seem to get above 3.2Ghz.
I did the extensive tests on how much my motherboard can handle by increasing it by 5 and running Orthos Blend test for 2 min each time. 240 with a HT-Link frequency of 1.6Ghz was my most stable outcome. My processor's multiplier went to 16x with a voltage of 1.328. I also heard that if you increase the voltage that your CPU life is cut down, so I figured this voltage would be the best choice. (From the original 1.23)

My problem is that my motherboard is being very finicky. If I have a CPU multiplier at X.5, any OC I try to do to the HTT fails. Also, any decent CPU multiplier can only be paired with a rather low HTT, otherwise the system crashes. 240Mhz is a couple steps below my absolute max HTT, so I figured it should be stable. I can't even use 220 with a 15x multiplier without getting errors. I have a DFI Lanparty DK 790FX-M2RS motherboard which I heard was great for overclocking. I don't think that 220Mhz for the HTT is really that fantastic.

Is there something else I need to do to my system in order to get better clocks or is this just the max my motherboard can take?

Any help is greatly appreciated! This is my first overclock, so be gentle when calling me stupid

I do not have that mobo, so I can't really comment on any quirks or tricks to stabilize it.

The one thing I want to say is that 3.2 Ghz is very impressive for only 1.32v.

If you want to see 3.5 though, you'll need way more than that.

AMD 65nm chips can run at 1.5v with no problems whatsoever. I would say that the absolute reasonable limit under water is 1.65v

CPU life may be cut short, but were you planning on keeping the chip for a decade?

Oh, and using Orthos is pointless since it only stresses two cores.

Use Prime 95 (Orthos is just a gui of it anyways).

Yeah I saw that Orthos only tested 2 cores, but I didn't know what tests I should have used in Prime95.

So what tests should I use in Prime 95 and what voltage would be recommended to get something around 3.5?

Thanks for the help!

Dang, looks like you have a good overclocker, I can barely hold 3.1GHz at 1.39v.

If Orthos only pushes 4 cores, would running two instances of it work? Not to thread jack ...

BTW, 3.2 on that voltage is very impressive.

Hey Waffleicious. Did you try the BETA BIOS yet? It's BETA so caution, but it hasn't caused any problems for me so far. Try keeping HT and NB frequencies at or below 2GHz (change their multipliers) and try upping the NB and CPU voltages; up to +0.25V on the CPU should be fine (it may get hot), and up the NB voltage to 1.330V (you may not need it if you're not increasing the NB frequencies that much but it never hurts to give it a little extra juice). Use Prime instead since the latest version works with quads; ideally you would run all three tests for +12hrs., but you can do with the large FFT one. You should also consider running memtest as well since RAM plays a very crucial part in AMD overclocking.

I ran Memtest when I first got this RAM and it's all good. I reduced my HT-Link Frequency and NB Multiplier by a ton and I still can't get 250+Mhz on my HTT.
Currently my CPU is at +100 V getting it from 1.232 to 1.328 I haven't raised my NB voltage yet because Everest is stating some pretty high temps for what it just labels as "Motherboard"
But yeah, I'm using the new BIOS and I like it a whole lot more.

If you are getting high temps. you may need better cooling before you can push further. On the NB I wouldn't go over 60*C when overclocking, and the PWN area I would try to keep below 50*C. Those are the two areas that if too hot can severely limit your OC (aside from the CPU of course).

I would get a new NB heatsink, but I don't even know which part of my motherboard is the NB xDDD

And @ smoothjk, I don't think that will work. It only recognizes 2 cores, so if you were to run 2 instances of the program, they would both probably stress the same 2 cores.
