How to tell powersupply is dead?

Thread Starter
My brothers computer has this power supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341001
He has 1 320gb harddrive, Asus P5N-D Mobo, e8400, arctic cooler 7, 8800gts 640 mb(the older one). I had shutted off his computer, and took the power outlet out of the PSU. I was putting in a fan controller for him. It was the Sunbeam Rheobus. I had connected 3 fans into it. When I tried to power it back on, nothing came on at all. I opened up the case and looked inside and I took the outlet out and put it back in, and tried ot turn it on again. I can see the back case fan and the heatsink spinning for like 1-2 seconds before it stops. The motherboard light at the bottom is on. Is the power supply dead?

Stick a fork in it, actually on second thought don't do that.

If you have a spare PSU laying around try connecting that and see what results you get.

But if you mother board power light is on then I dont think that its your problem, did you try removing the fan controller and setting everything back up the way it last fired??

Is the CPU fan connected to the fan controller? some boards wont start without a cpu fan present.

Yes, the CPU fan is connected to the fan controller. I took out the fan controller and tried starting it without it, and its still the same. And no, I don't have a multimeter.

Well, if it catches on fire...you're pretty much screwed.

If it doesn't turn on even when jumpstarted...you're screwed.

I'd unplug the PSU from everything in the computer and jumpstart it. Take a piece of wire and put it in a black and green connector (rite?) and flip the switch on the back of the PSU. Be sure not to touch the wire when it's on...it hurts like hell.

Well my best guess would be connect the cpu fan back to the mobo, and check that your front panel connections are all in place correctly.

Without a second psu or a multimeter its besically trial and error untill you find your answer.

EDIT: i forgot about jumping it aha, others have posted that already so i wont go into detail
