Need some software advice

Thread Starter
I checked through both faqs and the programs from the overclocker's must need program list gave me problems, i.e., the anti virus program keep making firefox crash and the spyware program didn't even work. I tried using the other faq but so many of the links were out of date, as stated.

So here's what i need if you guys can help out.

CD/DVD burning software

Video player software (wmp won't let me update because i've used my xp key to many times)

Audio player software

File converting software

Anti Virus software

Anti spyware and spyware removal software

Firewall (zone alarm wouldn't work because i can't update windows)

Also are the memory and hard drive defragging software worth it? what do they do that windows defrag doesn't?

Thanks in advance.

I'll add anything i couldn't think of right now.

I recommend not using any antivirus and just being smart about your web surfing, not going to any sketchy websites. I don't use any, and I never get anything. They all just get in the way and cause problems and incompatibilities, and make your comp a bit laggy when they start scanning.

For CD burning software, MagicISO or PowerISO should work fine, and they will also allow you to mount ISO images and create ISO images from disks.

File converting software: That would really depend on what types of files you want to convert. Video files? Audio files? Text/Word Processor files?
For video files, I heard SUPER © is a good converter, I installed it but I am yet to use it... lol.

Firewall: Again, I think that these just cause problems.

I say just use Windows defrag. I wouldn't really trust other software messing with all of my files, including my OS system files. I'd rather just let Windows do it, although Vista's defragger irritates me because they took out the progress bar that shows the fragmentation. But your sig says you have XP, so you still have that bar.

Video player: VLC player or Media Player Classic are pretty nice, very basic interfaces though. VLC will play pretty much any video files out there that you can think of.

Audio: I have a Zune, so I use that. iTunes isn't THAT bad, it's a decent player but it's kind of slow and just has a few things about it that I don't like, but it's not a bad player. A lot of people like to bash it because it's Apple though. A lot of people, including myself, like Winamp. I haven't used it in a while though since I got a Zune. But Winamp is nice. It's also a video player if you want, but VLC will play pretty much ANY video file out there without needing to download any codecs or anything.

That's my 2 cents. I'm sure some people will disagree with me about some things, antivirus and firewall in particular.

Antivir is a pretty low-key AV (doesn't seem to cause problems or hog resources).
