i know ... it sounds totally crazy i thought the same thing as you but the problem only shows up in vista. I can't be on vista for more than an hour cuz it hangs. I also thought about changing the chip. but i dont know where could i get one.

and about a tweaking software it would be the nvidia control panel. but i only used it to change the GPU settings im gonna try unninstalling it though...

Well, when you install NVIDIA System Tools, it just adds things to the NVIDIA Control Panel. So, in order to possibly fix this, I recommend installing everything that makes up NVIDIA System Tools. There should be 3 separate things to uninstall.

i have the feeling that it's fixed. the torture test's been running for hour and a half and it's still running. I'm gonna leave the doing other stuff during the night and see if it's still working for tomorrow.
But it does seem like the problem was related to the nvidia software somehow.
thanks to everyone who participated in this thread. i'll post the results tomorrow.

It is truly a pleasure and an honor to be able to help somebody else in their time of need. I get a good feeling when I can see that I've been a benefit to somebody else.

That's really awesome. I know how good of a feeling it is to have it working normally again, and not having to wait any longer to figure out what's wrong!

I'm guessing that the NVIDIA System Tools was sort of undoing any changes that were made in the BIOS prior to bootup by applying its settings during Windows startup.

So, I guess I just learned of another reason not to use overclocking software. This is a good thread.

do you have nTune installed? Is it set to load on startup? If so use msconfig from start-run and go to startup tab and uncheck ntune. Better yet uninstall it.

Nevermind! didn't read page two.
