What'd you think?

Will the graphics card fit in this case? And I need a good cooler for the CPU.

Honestly, that is completely overkill, it will most likely overheat, and well...that looks more like a budget Quad gaming build than an HTPC build.

It's now changed to a 9800GT and a low profile Zalman
.

Here's a picture of the case.

I don't think overheating should be a problem, should it?

That's all too much for an HTPC.

Stick with onboard graphics, like 8000 series or something, and an AMD board.

If you want dedicated graphics, go with a 3870.

And you shouldn't need more than a 500W PSU or so.

Most people's goal with an HTPC is something cool, silent, efficient. With what you've linked, you're looking at a lot of heat output, and no real gains in performance. But you'll need louder fans to cool everything.

Gaming graphics cards are completely overkill even for HD playback. You don't need all that much at all to get decent graphics on a HTPC. Browse around the HTPC section on this site and you'll see plenty of good advice.

I don't really see how. Those two tri-cool fan's on the side should be enough. They move air pretty well. I was going to use the hybrid SLI on the 9800GT.

I'm wanting 1080p playback. I need a quad for that yeah? How about the graphics? Might want to use a Wireless 360 Receiver to play some Saints Row or Overlord and the Corsair PSU is modular, perfect for the case as I can leave out all the floppy and 4pin connectors.

I've ordered this now, I don't mind sending back unopened items, but I need to be sure before I open this all up and start building (pictures will be posted )

You want as little noise as possible, and as low temperatures as possible. The less heat you give yourself to fight, the better off you'll be.

Really not needed. SLI is a gaming boost. As I said before, it is SOOO much easier to render stuff for movies and tv even at HD resolutions than for gaming. You will not see a difference in this usage scenario.

No way no how. I don't know where you heard that from. Plenty of onboard graphics are fully capable of 1080p. The most you'll want out of your processor is dual-core. You won't be doing that sever of multi-tasking on this thing, and the amount of heat a quad-core (like a Q66) puts out is just too much for a cramped HTPC you're trying to keep cool and quiet.

I already told you...stick with onboard, but if you do want a dedicated card, get a 3870. You will be more than satisfied with the price as well as the performance. You'll probably even be impressed!

This is mostly irrelevant to the rest of the build.

Go with the 520W model of the same PSU or the Silverstone Strider ST400. Trust me, you will not need more power than that, and both of those PSUs are modular and will serve you very well.

Send it all back and get an AMD based system. AMD processors will give you much less heat to deal with and will do you quite nicely.

The stuff you ordered is what you would build a gaming PC with. You won't need or even use all that in an HTPC. Not to mention you could have spent at least $200-$300 less. It's ultimately your money and your decision, but it would behoove you to do some poking around in the HTPC section before committing to anything. It's there for a reason and the people in there know a lot more than you think about this stuff.

Trust their advice, it is very reliable.

that is tooo strong for an htpc... i plan to get a nice m-itx case that comes with a ~250w psu, stick an intel board with the intel atom 330 (dual core atom, emulated quad core). with 2 gb ram, 1tb hdd, and tv tuner/remote, and a dvd burner... that is a good htpc because it is low wattage, super small, can burn dvd's and record live tv (I believe it is the Hauppage 1600 w/ remote for like 100 CAD)... anyways, that is closer to what and htpc should be, not that quad core beast...

my friend runs an old amd single core for his htpc, and it runs very nicely, just not good for burning and watching tv at the same time, which is where the extra cores come in...

Well, cost isn't so much an option. Gaming on it is going to be a need. But only light gaming.

It's my girlfriends HTPC, or going to be. She has a dual core E6600 set up now with a 8400GS that handles 720p just fine, but lags on 1080p.

We also listen to music on it and browse the web. I occasionally do a bit of website stuff on there with FTP and such.

Gaming, we're looking at playing Overlord and perhaps even Mirrors Edge (using a 360 pad)
