PII v i7 Gaming ONLY - Page 5

I think the PII is the best performance per value right now. I'd definitely wait for the new AM3's to come out. You'll either get a better deal on AM2+ or a sweet new quad for AM3.

Either way, I'm an AMD fanboi, and I know the i7 is better overall. Is it worth the premium? Not to me. I'm still very much content with my 9850be.

Keep your current rig. It's more than enough for any game you dare throw at it, and being in college, every penny you save will help somewhere else. You don't need to touch your rig, man.

I would go AMD Phenom II 940. I love it and I can easily OC it to 3.7GHz stable on air. I am working on building a phase change cooling system into my case soon. Hello 4.0!
The difference between AM2+ and DDR2 vs AM3 and DDR3 isn't worth the extra cost of DDR3 Ram at the moment, in testing over on Anand Tech, at best they saw a 4fps difference in most games. Stick with the 940 you'll be happy, it'll be plenty fast enough and 8gb DDR2 1066 is pretty cheap.

2 x 4850s will be better than a GTX 260, however not 'far superior' at all. A well overclocked 260 will compete within 5-10% and/or beat the 2x4850's at 1920x1200 w/ AA, thus if the i7 offers you better advantages in your other projects, go with it.

The same can be said for building 775+DDR3.

Phenom will dominate for the price

I'd still recommend the 4850X2 though, 4850 still dumps the heat into the case and the X2 is suppose to run cooler, cheaper, and slightly faster(minimal though). There was a review on it recently at it's current price($235)
