Phenom II, cut down on the 8GB RAM to 4GB, and then you have an extra 220$ for graphics...

PLUS if you OC the PII it will perform better than the i7 940.
AND it preforms better at STOCK speeds than a i7 920.
ALSO DDR3 Prices are #%$@ high.

I chose an i7 based system as, although more costly, I was after the most performance I could get with my budget. Bear in mind I already had two GTX260 cards, so my budget was distributed to the CPU, motherboard, and RAM only.
