I went from the QX9650 to the Q9650 for similar reasons George. All I wanted was 4ghz stable on air with a quad and the QX9650 is tough to do that with.

My Q9650 on the other hand...

i guess if this dont work i can look into selling it some how but i want that to be my last option id rather just get a i7 though 700 bucks seems like a waiste when a 920 i7 can hit over 4.0ghz and its cheaper so.

Fair enough George but you may want to consider, I spent about 3 months and went through 4 different motherboards before I could get 4 ghz stable on a QX9650. Only my EVGA 790i Ultra would do it without failing orthos after a couple of hours. the 3 intel chipset boards I tried never passed testing completely.

I to have a similar success story to Robilar's with my Q9650:

The Q9650 is the better choice. If you sell the QX9650, you could buy your 4.0GHz+ CPU and not want to upgrade to i7!

To Eric's point, you can still get a fair bit of coin for a QX9650. Easily enough for a Q9650 and some money left over.

For the i7, you'll need to buy a brand new Motherboard, New RAM, and a new Cooler ( if you want aftermarket). It's simply more convenient to buy a Q9650.

To me it seems like you're just overclocking for the peen of it and not really for practicality. You said that an i7 can do 4+ on air but you have to realize that the core 2 and the nehalem architecture is completely different and 4.0GHz on the different procs will result in different results. I think you could unload your QX on ebay for about 900-1000 dollars to a tech ignorant just looking for "the best (most expensive) processor" as you were before you bought your system.

The Price of the Q9650 definitely justifies the "upgrade" so go for it dude, if you really want 4 Gigahertz!
