Bypassing SSD Microstutter with a Perc5/i

Since SSD stutter is due in large part to their lack of cache, and the Perc5/i has a fair amount of built in cache, would this fix the random write microstutter issue.


How effective would it be to raid0 8 of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220341

On a Perc5/i?

(Without actually looking up the data), it wouldent help because the drives are so fast the cache would be almost empty all the time.

Assuming that the raid controller can handle that kind of bandwidth, 8 times faster then a single SSD, but 8 of them is probably not worth it, I would at most have 4 of them in Raid-0.

I am interested in the reply to this question as well. Has anyone owning the Perc 5/i tried MLC-based SSD drive on it? Does it still stutter?

But its not the speed that's the point, its that if small random writes can hang in cache for a bit they can then be written more sequentially, and with the BBU on the perc5/i its not even that dangerous.

that's a very good point. the pci-e 8x should give 2000 Megabytes a second in bandwidth, so it should be able to use the cache even with the SSD's being so fast. i would say it's probable that the cache on the perc 5/i would reduce or eliminate the stuttering issue.

Well from my experience with this issue I personally have never experienced the random write stuttering issue. On the other hand I have always used the registry tweak provided by Tony on the OCZ forums. Even on the PERC I had these tweaks done up just for the purpose of performance.

I will say this though, with the issues I was having with the PERC card I decided to hell with it and removed it from my system. Again with the tweaks in place and running the exact benchmark test w/ the ICH10R controller I get an average of 20MB's less. I am not sure is there should have been different settings used but I wanted to take away any variables so I made the test settings the same as w/ the PERC.

I have seen benchmarks on the OCZ forum of 8 SSD in RAID but not on the PERC 5/i. The transfer rate was 792MB/s, not sure if it was read or write, or what the test settings were I just remember that crazy high number LOL.

Thinking about the question more, the core series SSD's stutter due to a lack of cache AND the Jmicron contoller has issues. That said I am not sure if the PERC cache will help.

I have 8 SSDs on the PERC 5i. Honestly, I would not recommend it. It bottlenecks your processor pretty bad in almost all real world applications. Load times for 2 ssds really aren't much different than load times with 8.

As for the stuttering issues, I never noticed them on onboard either, so I don't know.

Hmm ok, also what didn't you like about the PERC 5/i? Why was it a pain?

And what do you mean about bottle necking your prossesor with 8ssds?
