[Fud]Q6600 to finally retire in Q2 2009

So long old chap

Intel is getting ready to retire its first 65nm based quad-core, the legendary Q6600. This 2.4GHz Kentsfield 65nm based chip is by far one of the best selling high end chips that came out of Intel in the past few years.

People simply loved it, and even for this Xmas shopping season, many people prefered this chip over the Core 2 Quad Q8200, as 2.33GHz just didn't sound fast enough.

The most successful quad-core of all time will receive a product discontinuance notice in March time, while the official end of life is planned for Q2 2009, probably by the end of quarter.

Intel plans to retire Q6700 Kentsfield with 2.66GHz core clock in February. The last shipments are leaving Intel's warehouses as we speak and as of end of this month, you won't be able to buy this one anymore, at least not from Intel.

Yorkfield 45nm quad-cores will take over and these chips will definitely last throughout 2009, possibly even well beyond 2009.

I think this is a great loss, but I hope intel will come out with something to carry the legacy of the Q6600

I personally think the i7 920 is it. I mean it OC's just as good as the 965 within a safe limit and can be had for less than $300. Thats not too shabby. RAM prices and Motherboards keep it expensive for now but those are dropping rapidly.

Well, that's why the i7 920 couldn't be the spiritual successor of the Q6600. Part of the Q6600's appeal was that it could be overclocked well on a variety of chipsets. The i7 only has one that I'm aware of (X58).
