Am I running too hot?

I've been having issues with heating lately, and would like some input on my current situation.

About a week ago I noticed that my temps seemed pretty high, even at idle. At idel, my temps where 40 degrees for case temp, 45 - 50 for the cpu, and 60 for my GPU, again those are all at idle. At load all my temps were increasing, with my cpu hitting 65 degrees before I killed my tests.

At that time I had everything listed in my sig in an Antec P180 case.

Last night on the way home I picked up some AS thermal compound and a new case, the Antec 1200, having read good reviews on it's cooling abilities.

I finally got everything moved over to the new case late last night, and did some testing. My temps did drop significantly, almost 15 degrees across the board. My temps now are

Case 28 degrees
CPU 27 to 37 on the 4 cores
GPU 45

Are those in line with what I should expect out of this setup, or should I be seeing cooler temps?

Idle temps look good on the CPU and the GPU. You may want to rung Prime95 to load all 4 cores of the Q6600 100%. Run this for 30mins to an hour and monitor the load temps with CoreTemp.

Is your Q6600 a G0 or B3?

You're idle temps are all fine.

The CPU hitting 65C's under load isn't any dangerous either. Do as MCBrown.CA says, run Prime95 for 30-40 mins an see what the load temps are then. And also, with Prime95 you're core temps are going to get a bit hotter than normal under load.
My core's are hitting 63C's under load with Prime. But usually never over 55C under load while gaming and such.

It's a G0. I'll give Prime95 a try when I get home tonight.

Regarding temps, do you guys know if there is a technical upper limit for my cpu, and what's the practical upper limit?

Thanks for the quick replies

Core temps of 65 are fine. Most temp reporting apps will give a "core temp" and a "cpu temp", the latter will usually run 10-20 deg C cooler than core temp. I'd keep the CPU temp below 70C, ideally you'd keep it around 60ish but that's not likely to happen with a 8500 on an overclocked Q6600.

The max for a G0 is 71C. I would try to keep it under 65C as much as possible. At least that is what I think.

So is that 71 the max for any of the cores, or is that based on an average of the four cores? I'm asking since my cores vary by a range of 10 degrees.

IIRC intel does the max by the "cpu" temp reported rather than by core temp.

I don't seem to have an application that shows my overall cpu temp, coretemp and hwmonitor only show the temps of the 4 cores. Is it as simple as taking my 4 core temps and averaging them, or is there more to it?

I guess it's not a big deal as long as I stay under 65 or so on my highest core, but at this point curiosity gets the best of me.

There's more to it, but I don't really know what the "more" is - I do know that my reported CPU temp is much lower than the average of my core temps. Here's what I get in speedfan at idle (well, had some stuff running just prior to the SS so its a bit hot, but you get the idea) and maxed out in prime95 (and room temps kinda high)
