Will this 4870 have problems with my system?

Hi,
I'm looking to get a new video card. My system is a 790gx motherboard and a Phenom II 920, so Im liking the idea of a dragon system. However, I had a 4850 in it, and when I installed Windows 7 (my primary os) it was a veritable *****storm of artifacts, game crashes (any game within 5 seconds of launch would crash and then all graphic related things would not render correctly (even webpages). I assumed that this was driver related buisness and sent it back and am now using the integrated HD3300 graphics on my mobo, which is also wonky, but not nearly as bad as the 4850. Anyway, my question is, if I get a 4870, am I going to have the same problems that I am having with the 3300 and the 4850?

Thanks,
Dave

Windows 7 should not be use for a main OS that may be your problem. Windows 7 is cool to play around with. Have you tried using vista and did you have any experience with the same problem

Yeah, i have no money, and I dont really like vista all that much, so I figured I would just use the beta until it came out for real and buy it then. I dont want advice on operating systems, I just want to know if anyone is running a 4870 under windows 7 stably.

I dont think that its an issue so much with the card if it runs fine in Vista/XP. If the problem lies just within Windows 7, then its most likely a driver issue. I would honestly hold off for now. The Catalyst 9.3 drivers will have included Windows 7 support (not just beta support like the current drivers for Windows 7).

EDIT: When I was running the beta my VisionTek 4870 ran fine. I know you said that you dont want OS advise, but honestly, Windows 7 is not that far off from Vista. I hated Vista at first until I had a rig that was powerful enough to run it smoothly. Your current rig shouldnt really have any issues running Vista either.

Yeah, my previous system was a Phenom 9850 BE, with 4gbs of ram and a 9800gtx+, so its not the speed of vista that bothers me, its just that I use ubuntu as well, and going from the freedom of linux to the crappiness of vista regardless of speed is just soul crushing, but mostly, i just have no money.
