RaptorX is the last generation, it's a little slower.
Honestly though, if you want pure performance, go with a SSD. If you want storage, go with a 6400AAKS. I see no reason to buy a Raptor unless you come across a good deal, like I did.

Lay off

the enter button.

Velociraptor is SATA 3.0 spec, RaptorX is 1.5 (numbers refer to MBPS speed). Velociprator is a better choice.

Velociraptor has physically smaller platters (better access times) with much higher areal density (better transfer rates), meaning it's signifcantly faster overall.

SATA 1.5gbps vs 3.0gbps is fairly meaningless.

Yup.

RaptorX do something like 100MB/s while the Velociraptor do like 130MB/s

A pair of fast 7200 rpm drives, or even single fast 7200rm drive, is not that much slower than the raptors, and cost way less.

If you have any sort of budget at all, it's hard to recommend raptors (especially last gen ones), or SSDs, at this point.

Depending on exactly what drive that is in your sig, there are potentially much faster 7200rpm drives out by now.

I picked two seagate 1TB ( Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000333AS) drives. I got them today and have been running badblocks on them to see if the whole thing is writable and readable. These do 100-110MB/s sequential write for the most of the disk, tapering at around 60MB/s towards outside and 110-120MB/s seq read. If you want read speed of the order of 150-200MB/s, put them in RAID1 (like I will do). If you want read and write speed (of the same order), put them in RAID0. Total cost: 200$. 2TB in raid0 and 1TB in RAID1, no raptor can beat that.

If you want real speed beyond 200MB/s, invest in a pair of SSDs.

I don't know why anybody would spend money on raptors. Access time gains pale in comparison to the cost per GB. SSDs score much better there. Like 60GB OCZ solid series for under 100$ on zipzoomfly, 10 times better seek (if you can call it that for an SSD) time.

I forgot to mention that the firmware problems with seagate drives are resolved with newer supplies.
