Should I overclock?

Thread Starter
I built my first computer about 6 months ago ( its in my specs ) and my only regret is that i got the ati 4850 graphics card because my computer crashes sometimes while playing WoW. I'm pretty sure that it is because of the ati drivers and Vista ( I have 64 bit)( wish there was some way to fix it )

But anyway my computer is pretty fast and I don't know if I should overclock it. I know its a good computer to overclock I just don't want to mess my baby up

I have read up on it a little and do I only need to increase the FSB a little at a time?

the crashing is most likely ATi drivers. i know i had a x1650pro and it wouldnt even load WoW. i went to guru3d and got 3rd party drivers. they actually worked a lot better compared to sapphire (my old card's manufacturer) and the official ATi drivers. u could try the guru3d drivers and that could help ur crashing.

other than that, if ur computer will do 40+ FPS and not dip below 40, then i say no, unless u want to do encoding or editing or rendering. the naked eye cannot tell a big difference above 30fps. TV in the US runs at 30fps, 24fps in teh UK. i think some HD movies are 60fps. so if ur comp can handle ur games at 40fps or better, u dont NEED to OC, but there is always bragging rights a stable OC maybe be able to keep ur FPS from dropping below 40 in high action areas.

and u r talking about OCing the CPU? not the GPU... right?

and other than that, i say u should have gone nvidia, lol. drivers from ATi seem to be consistently crap.

good luck

Hello mate,
First get better cooling for your cpu!
When i first started Overclocking i thought i would just clock it to be as fast as the fastest chip sold in my class. So i wanted to be at 3.3Ghz as thats what the E8600 is sold at!
But it wont stop there! You will see how much better it runs the more you clock it, and then your hooked
So i say yes overclock it, but do get a better cooler! And never take the v-core volts over what they say for your chip! And also keep your max temps below 70c and you should be fine!

just make sure you read about it first. overclock in little steps and test. you also have the G0 stepping Q6600 which is a good start. make sure you don't make the voltages go too high. i don't own a quad so i don't know much about the limits of volts but they are much higher than duals. but yeah, set yourself a target say 2.8ghz at first. then go ahead to 3ghz then see how far you can take it with temps becoming too high.

I thought the Tuniq 120 was a good cooler

My cpu temps are ~33 degrees idle and ~47 degrees 100% load

If I do decide to overclock my cpu I would like to do it without messing with the volts just the FSB. With that said whats a reasonable clock with stock volts?

It would almost be a crime not to OC that Q6600!

There's no good reason really not to mess with the volts. If you leave it on Auto the board will mess with the volts and not do a great job of it imho. You've got an excellent board with lots of control, take advantage of that!

I would slowly bump the FSB until it gets unstable, then bump the voltage, then FSB etc until it is either getting a bit warm or as fast as you want it to be or you are getting close to max reliable voltage for your chip.

The 4850 is a great card, I'm sure there's some way to work around the driver issue (I haven't had any driver issues with my 4830 -but I don't play many games).

Your cooler is just fine, have fun with it. Reviews rank it pretty close to the wildly popular TRUE

I'm not sure what's the range you can get up to without touching the volt, but always take it slow. You can start with uping the fsb slowly and running OCCT, which takes about an hour compared to prime95, for stability test.

How long do you have to test in Prime95 inorder to test stability?
