Finally got my qx9650 stable at 4.0ghz but have a question - Page 4

so am i understanding this correctly its normal to have a higher vcore when windows is idle but a lowe vcore when the chip is under load?

That sounds like alot of volts, I've been scared to run my Q9550 higher than 1.3625 with LLC on, which is more volts than regular 1.3625. After reading this article at anandtech I decided that with 1.45 being an absolute maximum and wanting to be safe on the load to idle voltage spike that 1.3625 to 1.4 LLC on might be pushing it even. Also that is a high heat load, im suprised your under 71.4c for very long even on water. I understand the need for 4ghz though try other settings with a 1.4 vcore, up some other voltages and see.


And yes with LLC off idle will be higher than load. Idea is the voltage will never exceed bios specification.

With LLC on Idle and load become more similar with idle usually being a hair under load, definitely will exceed bios spec vcore when coming off load to idle.

well with llc off my bios is set to 1.51vcore my load vcore is 1.432v as for my temps i primed 4 hours and didnt break 70c at a vcore of 1.45v with llc on

Of course you should lower your vocre. Who knows how long it will hold. At least it doesn't get too over the top in temps

I'd say stay within intel limits, even if it means lowering clocks.

I just have a hunch that your mobo isn't built as good as it can be, causing problems with overclock. No way to prove it though.

yeah highest stable clock ive been able to get is 3.8ghz with a vcore of 1.38125v

I hear everyone saying that no more then 1.365 vcore for the 45 NM. They base their assumptions on the intel tech documents. in my mind! IMHO those figures are almost certainly conservative. engineering numbers ALWAYS are!(assuming the engineers are GOOD) They dont want to take the risk of RMA's due to non conservative figures. i've had e5200 at 4.1 vcore 24/7 but didn't run it long. it passed two days of prime and several passes of IBT. it really depends on you! what do you want? first make sure its stable as heck 48 hr testing then if it is and the temps are ok. why the hell not? you didn't buy extreme edition to be conservative right? I can vibe with you wanting 4.0ghz! it's just a number im working on for my q9550 and 3.985ghz just doesn't cut it!! lol

There is NOTHING conservative about extreme edition procs expensive as hell, overpriced imo but that's the attitude you got. and if I bought one i'd clock the hell out of it, provided stable.

ALSO !!! be sure to play with the REf voltages try .63 and .61! those are crucial for quad OC! i got mine at 1.33 VTT ref .61 4.0 ghz at vcore of 1.38. I needed to up my NB volts to 1.61! so you may need some massive NB volts to get stable at lower vcore. just a thought.

The problem is that your CPU just cant get 4.0GHz at safe vcore. I personally would keep the vcore at 1.3625v max. But in your case, I think you can only run 3.8GHz at that vcore.

As for the voltages, the difference between vcore set in bios and what windows loads is called voffset and is a safety feature. Then when the vcore drops under load is known as vdroop. This is also a safety feature. It does this to lower your voltage under load to protect the CPU from voltage spikes that occur when going to load, and coming off from laod. It was safe to enable Loadline calibration with the 65nm CPUs since they have a higher voltage tolerance. But with the 45nm CPUs, it is adviseable to leave LLC disabled since the voltage spikes, especially when the CPU is already near its max at 1.3625v, can be damaged from the spikes. This is highly debated, and some beieve in it, while others dont. So it is a judgement call on your part.

well im keeping llc off then i guess ill finik around abit more and see but i dont think its possible to get 4.0ghz without raising the vcore i just dont see it being done and i guess its a decision now of either taking the risk of running over 1.4v or just settling with 3.8ghz
