have you tried to turn off superfetch?

My system is sucking down 2-3GB on the regular idling [2234mb now] but thats only 27% for me so its not bothering me, but before i upgraded i regularly saw 95% usage and after turning superfetch off i started sitting at ~40%

Ditch the sidebar... But that seams to be just SuperFetch. It just loads your favorite programs into memory for faster access when you want them.

open up everest, goto file--->preferences then go down to vista sidebar, check enable then goto the next section down and configure what you want on the sidebar.

And on some systems superfetch goes a bit nuts and preloads to much, or if your forcing superfetch to dump the cache then reload it rapidly [i noticed this alot when changing maps in multiplayer games] then its doing alot of harddrive thrashing thus slowing down the system.

another common ailment with vista systems is the indexing service, this caused massive slow downs on my system, since while its designed to only use idle CPU cycles, it doesnt care about HDD activity, so on a system where there is plenty of spare CPU cycles [a 3.8ghz quad core for example] it is constantly indexing, but since even while playing games i have spare CPU cycles this causes and issue as the indexing service is thrashing the drive, in addition to my apps using the drive.

if you Right click your drive, goto properties, then uncheck index this drive and then apply it should calm the HDD access down and alleviate some of the slow downs in the system.

as far as your apps not loading quick all my common apps such as fast stone, Firefox, word, wordpad, notepad, etc are all instant loads.

basically page/hard faults are the OS going to look for something in memory, not finding it, thus looking for it on the page file.

Theres nothing wrong with your system. Windows Vista uses servcies called Superfetch and Prefetch to preload commonly used programs into RAM in advance for faster load times. As soon as your system requires RAM for another process the "fetch" services dump the required amount of RAM. But chances are it doesnt have to as it already has that program fetched for you. So needless to say theres nothing to worry about!
