Linksys BEFSR81 Dropping Connection 5+ times a day

Hey all, this just started happening recently.

My Linksys BEFSR81 V3 is dropping connection a few times a day. However, I don't think it's the cable modem, since the phone (goes through the cable box) still works. (Every time the net goes down usually, the phone stops working - not in this case, which leads me to believe it's the router) However, I can still connect to the router's admin page (192.168.1.1) even after the net 'goes down'.

I need to do a hard reset (unplug, plug back in) of the router to get connection back. Don't need to touch the cable modem.

This is just happening recently - had this router for ~2 years with no issues.

Firmware Version: 2.51.3, but I can't update as my router just whitescreens if I try to patch it to the latest V3 firmware, requiring me to do a full reset.

Is my router busted? Could it be something to do with my internet provider?

Thanks!

Edit: Testing it by putting a direct connection to the PC isn't an option, since there's almost always at least 3 people using PCs in this house, and the timing is soooo random. It can not happen for 12 hours at a time, then happen a few times in an hour.

Have you tried ruling out the cable modem?
Honestly, I am not sure how, since you added your edit.
If you ISP is considerate they will try testing out there lines, and the signal. Maybe you just need a new modem.

Do you have a spare router?

with old, or cheap routers, having too many active connections will kill it. this increases when multiple people are using the same router. BT much?

Happens regardless of torrent use or computer activity. Can happen while I'm at work, family is sleeping, and just the girlfriend is using it to talk on instant messengers. Next to zero net activity.

Well, here is what I am going to recommend.

Put the router and PC less then a foot away from each other. Hold down the Reset button on the back for 30 seconds, then unplug it while still holding the button for 30 seconds, then plug it back in while still holding the button for 30 seconds. Then try to flash to the Linksys Firmware. If flashing to the Linksys Firmware does not work, try flashing to the latest build of DD-WRT v24 SP1 or v24 SP2beta. If that doesn't help or solve any issues, then it could be your ISP or it could still be the hardware in the router.

Sacre - Did you ever find out what was happening? My Linksys BEFSR81 is exhibiting the same symtoms except not as often (once or twice a week).

I am running the latest version of the firmware: 2.51.4, build 006 Aug 21 2009. I am also using WallWatcher to monitor the Router but quiet frankly I don't know what I am looking at when I review the logs.

Thanks
Randy
