Add another drive to my RAID 5 array with Perc 5/i?

Thread Starter
Am I able to add another drive to my RAID 5 array using the Perc 5/i controller without formatting the array?? If so, how?

I have 3x 750GB drives in the array right now, and have a 4th drive hooked up. I can set it as a hot-swap drive, but I can't figure out how to add it to the array without deleting the array and making a new one. This would be very preferable as I don't have enough space outside my RAID 5 array to backup all of the data in order to delete the RAID 5.

Thanks in advance!

there is an option in the "manager" program, expand or something.. (a word like expand, but i think longer..) i read every post in the perc 5i topic. and i cant remember the word...

it warns about backing up first, (because there is a chance it will fail..) but the posters in the other topic had tried it without data loss. should be somewhat safe..

Ah, it's in the reconstruction wizard...well, that is poorly named, imo.

I have added drives two times now. It has worked without any issue. That said, my ultra-critical files I still backup to another source before adding the drive.

I wouldn't know for sure without a bit of research, but I believe the integrated Intel soft-raid does not support adding drives to an existing array.

hye guys ... if I have 4 x 2tb drives on my Perc 5i and I want to add an extra 2TB to expand the array, how long can I expect this to take ? anyone been through this ?

also, is the array usable for light data access or should I not touch it while its expanding?

thanks

I use megaraid. They seem to have reorganized the UI since I have last done this. Apparently it is named the "Modify Drive Group Wizard" now. To access the feature you need to right-click on the drive group and select modify drive group. You can also access it from the tools menu under drive group.

Since I have not used this feature since the UI has changed, I would refer you to the help docs which have instructions.

If you have a configuration similar to mine, adding a 750GB drive to a RAID 5 array on the PERC 5/i takes around three hours to rebuild.

If I recall it would let you read/write data from the drive while it was adding the new drive; but I didn't want to touch it in case something bad happened. For a 2TB drive, expect it to take many, many hours.

The most easiest way to add additional drives to existing RAID 5 array is using Dell OpenManage Server Administrator to reconfigure RAID 5:http://www.partition-magic.org/hardw...to-raid-5.html. No downtime and data loss.
