I just saw this in Lord Xeb's signature, and I think that it should be added to the OP somewhere:

IDF Taipei: Intel Releases DTS Specs For All Core 2 Processors (on Tom's Hardware)

The article has some very, very important points that everyone needs to see. Here's one that I think might be the most important:

The reason Tjunction Max (the temperature where thermal protection is engaged) is not the silver bullet for 45nm Core 2 processors is because the [DTS] sensors suffer from extremely high amounts of "slope error," that is, they become less accurate as the real temperature moves further from Tjunction Max.

An Intel document (PDF) describes the error on Atom processors, which use the same or similar DTS as those on 45nm Core 2 processors :

"The digital thermal sensor (DTS) accuracy is in the order of -5°C +10°C around 90°C ; it deteriorates to ±10°C at 50°C. The DTS temperature reading saturates at some temperature below 50°C. Any DTS reading below 50°C should be considered to indicate only a temperature below 50°C and not a specific temperature. External thermal sensor with “BJT†model is required to read thermal diode temperature."
But the entire article as a whole is excellent, and it also discusses the DTS used in the 65nm Core2 processors. I only wish that I had this article at my disposal for the past 2 years. But it's certainly better late than never.

im pretty sure the tjmax for the i5-750 is 99c or you can just set an even 100c
but most have them at 99c in realtemp

TJ target is written into each core of the Core i CPUs. It's not the same as TJMax but without any further details from Intel, most software assumes that it is close enough to the real thing. There is lots of error in these sensors and error in Intel's procedure for setting TJMax. Without Intel coming clean about their sensors, 100% accurate temperatures are not possible.

TwoCables: The Intel news release and article at Tom's are both full of half truths. Intel has used a variety of different temperature sensors on different CPU models and they all have a variety of issues. Lumping them all together in the same pile only confused the issue. Interesting reading but I wouldn't call that article 100% accurate.

This is something I've been saying for awhile, which is why I prefer to use MB temp sensor measurements rather than core temps estimated off a grossly inaccurate CPU diode. The inaccuracy of those diodes was obvious purely from observation. It's good to see that Intel confirms it.
