How is this 4870 compared to the GTX 260 55nm Core 216?

Thread Starter
I have always been a little bias towards Nvidia, but I know the 4870 is a great deal. I was planning on getting the GTX 260, and then using my 8600gt for a dedicated PhysX card. However, since the eVGA GTX 260 55nm Core 216 I want is $210-$20 rebate, that makes it $190. I found this Asus 4870 for $165-$30 rebate and was thinking about getting this instead.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121288

Does anyone have this card? How well can I OC it? I will be watercooling it with a Dtek VGA Fuzion and the Dtek Unisink. Also, how is Asus' warranty, I like eVGA for it's lifetime one. Is the price difference worth it to go to a GTX 260? Gimme your opinions. Also, try to provide me benchmarks, or first hand experience and not just fanboyism.

EDIT: I will be gaming on a 24" 1920x1200 resolution, so would the 512mb be much worse than the 896mb that the GTX 260 has. I won't get the 1gb 4870 unless it is cheaper than the GTX 260 either.

Check out this review here http://techgage.com/article/ati_hd_4...260216_896mb/1

GTX 260 216 is slightly better, but they are still very comparable. OC the 4870 and you can probably surpass that of a GTX 260.

From my experience with the 48XX series, they can OC very far. I took my 4850 from 625MHz stock, to 790MHz with only a small bios vmod.

For those prices, go with the 4870 though.

You won't be disappointed

the gtx260 216 equivalent is the 1gb 4870. there's not much difference between the 1gb and 512mb (just about 5%) except for eyecandies like aa/af at high resolutions.

I would recommend the GTX260. I really like my 4870 1GB and you can get them for the same price as the 260 if you look around or in the for sale section if you don't mind used. My recommendation goes like this: 4870 512mb < GTX260 core 216 < 4870 1GB

They are all so close in performance that you won't see huge differences but the extra memory will help in some games (Crysis, games with detailed textures, future games...)

Seems like the GTX 260 does quite a bit better and they compare it to the 1gb version. I am worried that the 512mb won't be enough. The games I plan on playing that are new are Crysis, Warhead, Mirror's Edge, F.E.A.R. 2

Friend of mine have 4870 1GB and he play crysis V.High 1920x1080 0AA smoothly. I would highly reccomend you to buy 1GB with your monitor if you want to play games with that res. But in case of 260+8600 or 4870 512, i would pick 260. As I said more memory is essential for fullHD gaming.

Now that I would like to see, but then again what is "smooth" exactly?

@OP the GTX260c216 will beat the 4870 512mb steadily in games. It really comes down to how much money you want to spend. The 4870 512mb is still an amazing card. And check out this review comparing the 4870 1gb version to the GTX 260core216 card.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/top-10...core-216-test/

good luck with whatever card you choose.

I forgot to mention, if you plan to use the 8600 as a physx card, you will want to have the 260 if you use Vista as it only does one graphics driver at a time. If you go with 7, you can do the 4870 + 8600 just fine.

it's slightly worse tthan the GTX 260 216 but there shouldn't be that big of a difference

tbh i'd get the 1gb version. the extra memory helps with AA/AF and some games like GTA IV are better off with more memory.

I was trying to decide the same thing, I got this a few days ago when it was 189.99, $30 mail in rebate. I was going to get the 1GB Sapphire 4870 but it was 189.99 no mail in rebate, and didn't come with a free game. I don't see how you could beat that deal
