Problem resolved.

Ended up starting all over but this time I used a 19 multiplier with turbo and IEST. Got up to 4.0 stable!

I have a question which may be kinda dumb. I haven't OC'ed at all, still on the stock cooler while I finish up my watercooling loop, but I tinkered with some voltages a bit. I can't seem to adjust vCore.. in the BIOS I see a "Target vCore" value which is grayed out and I can't change. Then there's another setting right above that (can't remember name, I'm not at home now) which allows me to tweak vCore in intervals of 10mv. Then there's VTT voltage. And of course vRAM. Rather than tweaking the setting above target vCore I'd rather just set it directly-- is there any reason this is grayed out? Can I unlock that somehow?

No matter what I set the setting above target vCore to, I reboot and look in the HW monitor (BIOS) and I'm reading 1.24V. When I have vRAM set to 1.65V it shows as 1.61V still. And VTT is also lower than the settings I created. If I boot into Windows, CPU-Z shows voltage as .994V and it ramps up to 1.25V and sticks there if it's under load. I think I must have some type of setting conflicting with my manually set voltages, but not sure what it is. Help! Btw I'm on the latest release BIOS, P09

Also, one more thing is weird.. I can set my RAM timings manually (9-9-9-24) and have it underclocked @ 1600MHz but when I run memtest86+ it freezes in the first test at 7% every time. The LCD on the mobo reads "FF". The system runs great though, I don't think the RAM is bad. I was thinking the "BIOS caching" setting may be interfering if memtest is trying to overwrite those blocks. Thoughts?

To my knowledge you can not unlock that greyed out feature. The setting above it will however adjust your vcore and project what voltage it will be out in that grey section. The reason voltages are dropping is due to EIST or vdroop.

Because on the i7 the cpu now contains the memory controller. You'll will probably have to adjust the VTT to become stable.

You need to enable System Turbo to be able to change the voltages.

Set your RAM to 1.65V

Greetings, fellow BloodRagers. I've recently had some issues with my overclock:

Like very many of the people on this forum, I want to get my i7 920 to 4.0 GHz and hopefully beyond. However, stability is critical and I don't want to sacrifice stability for speed. Here's the issue. I open up CPU-Z, HWMonitor, RealTemp, SpeedFan, and LinX. I choose to run a test with a problem size of 20000 5 times using 3068 MB of memory. I start the test. My CPU temps are normal (~30-35°) according to RealTemp and SpeedFan. Roughly 10 seconds into the test, the system suddenly turns off without any blue screen, warning, etc. It just powers down as if I had pulled the plug out of the wall, and then it restarts. More details on my system and settings:

Core i7 920 DO Batch 3910A298
Foxconn Quantum BIOS P09
Custom liquid cooling loop (I don't think temps are the problem here)
PPM, EIST, and CxE enabled (If I disable them, I can't use the 21x multiplier; as far as I know all BloodRage boards do this)
Execute Disable Bit, Virtualization, and Hyper-Threading (all 4 cores) enabled
IMC Configuration enabled, Independent Channel Configuration, 6-way Channel Interleaving, 4-way Rank Interleaving
Virtual XMP disabled
Timings: 7-7-7-24-1-59-8-14-4-4 (everything after Command Rate I left on auto)
vCore: 1.36250V (+150mV)
VDroop Compensation/LLC enabled
uncore: +160mV (my BIOS doesn't show a target uncore voltage)
1.8V PLL: 1.898V
CPU Clock Amplitude: 0.800V
vDIMM: 1.65V
X58 IOH: 1.22V
X58 VCCA 1.1: 1.108V
X58 VCCA 1.5: 1.506V
ICH10R SB: 1.518V
Spread Spectrum, CPU/IOH Clock Skew, and OC Recovery disabled
CPU Turbo Always On (multiplier would be 20x if this was off)
BCLK: 191 MHz
QPI Fast Link enabled
QPI Multiplier: auto
uncore Multiplier: auto, target 3064 MHz
Memory Bus Multiplier: 8x, target 1532 MHz
PCIe Bus Clock: 100 MHz

Thanks in advance.

Ok, if stability is important to you and you are not trying to set any records for overclocking I would flash my bios back to P06 and you should be fine. If you want to run P09 I would try adjusting your VCCA 1.1 to 1.20v - 1.25v, lower your PLL back down to 1.8v, set your VTT to 1.35v and your vcore back to 1.31v, also set your ram to 1.65v. These should be good for 200x21 (actually 200x19 with turbo enabled) on P06 with the exception of VCCA 1.1, leave it on auto. Pretty much on P06, the only thing you should have to mess with would be your vcore, VTT and manually set your timings and ram voltage, everything else should be auto. You do not need LLC enabled either, messes with the voltages too much. As far as turbo goes (x21) you will need the EIST enabled, it will only lower your speed if you are idling, surfing the web or other mundane tasks.

I've found a few threads that state some people have had issues running their Sonar card (the proprietary card which comes with the board) with Windows 7.

I just put together a rig for a friend and used the included card. Unfortunately, we can't launch any of the apps (I've tried compatibility mode); we get an error: The product license cannot be installed on this system (error 8001).

Soooo... anyone have any workarounds, I know this is going to cause a problem with games, etc. Thanks.

This is when i then installed realtek drivers restarted and then installed the Creative ones and all was good after the restart after the creative drivers installed

1.Uninstall Creative drivers,reboot

3.Put in your disk and run it under Vista Sp1 compatibility mode( to do this right+click and do open or explore, then right+click on the setup.exe file and set compability to vista sp1 in the dropdown list)
4.Install realtek drivers,reboot
5.Install Creative drivers,reboot
6. YOUR DONE AND NOW YOUR SOUND CARD WORKS

PS: make sure you install everything through the disc menu(the bloodrage utility thing), meaning don't browse to the setup file on the disc and install.

All I have to say is THANK YOU MAN, YOUR AMAZINGGG

(Yea i know somethings stated above are obvious, but always nice to read easy to follow instructions IMO )

^ Excellent, I looked for a while and didn't find this, thanks. Also, didn't think of running the physical disc in compatibility mode; great stuff.
