i'll be running Foxconn A7GM-S board and AMD BE-2400, 2gb ram (I can add more if i need to)

I'm just not sure which OS to install. I'll be viewing a lot of .mkv, .divx, and .rmvb format files. Which OS and which program would u guys suggest? Thanks guys for the feedback and suggestions. Please explain a little bit so I can learn from it.

Edited: seems like vista home premium 32bit and linux is fairly equal. I'll give vista a try first. so far, i'm still having trouble getting XBMC to play my .rmvb format files.
WMC seems a little confusing for my parents. any comments will be appreciated. thanks guys!

oh, btw, My A7GM-S board's hdmi output is not giving me 5.1 surround sound or DTS or Dolby digital, how do i fix it?

I've been running Windows 7 for my HTPC for 2 reasons.
1. It's free right now, and I like free.
2. Since it's the "ultimate" version it has all the cool media center features.

Yeah Windows 7 should be an option in the poll. It works well on "light" systems.

I like free too, but then this will be temporary? i don't want to keep dealing with formatting and stuff. The reason I put Vista Premium 32bit are server 2008 64bit because I have these two available so I don't have to buy another OS. I'm actually thinking of trying out MythUbuntu, I wonder how good that will work
