Is this temperature normal for a Core i7?

Thread Starter
I'm using a XIGMATEK HDT-S1284EE; and it stays around 46C @ 3GHZ on idle, and around 67C on full load. Is this around normal?

EDIT: I don't know if that is right, using ASUS PC Proble II says the CPU temp is 46C, but Core temp says that all my cores are at or around 40C; at full load, all the cores seem to stay around 60C.

From what I've read the I7's get pretty hot. That seems within spec to me though. Not sure what the thermal spec is on the I7, but I have seen others with those temps and running 24/7 here, so I should think you are ok. Could also be your ambient.

I'd use coretemp's readings, and yes, 60C sounds about right for that cooler and CPU combo.

Try real temp also. Does anyone know the TjMax of the i7? I'm hearing it's stored in the "MSR" in the chip, but RealTemp and CoreTemp set different TjMax's.

Wouldn't worry too much about the TJMax unless your trying to go for an unstable overclock.

Keep your temps lower then 75-80C and everything should be fine.

My i7 920 is showing as 63°C for the CPU Temperature Sensor in Everest under a full load (100% on all 4 Cores) but under the Core #1, #2, #3, & #4 Temperature Sensors it is showing between 78-83°C.

Core Temp also shows Core #0,#2,#3,#4 @ 76-83°C

Frequency 2798MHz (133.24x21.0)

This is running everything at stock speeds with Retail box stock cooling in a CM690 case w/ Gigabyte EX58-UD5 mobo.

Doing an immediate restart and bringing up the BIOS shows the CPU Temperature at 52°C with the Fan Speed at 2353 RPM

I'm a bit confused as to what is most accurate and what the difference is between the 4 Core temps (always higher) and the CPU temp (always lower)...

At 3.2GHz, the average of each core is around 70-73C.

Probably because my room is almost 85F, probably need to add a few fans to my Cosmos S.

Update:

Hahah... Silly me, I had the CPU voltage on "AUTO", I was getting well above 2V at 3GHz, probably a reason for such the high temperatures I was worried about.

Its at 1.15 now, and I can probably get it a little lower at 3.2GHz.
