What video format does the Xbox 360 play?

I've been encoding them as AVI's with the H.264 codec. They play like crap and skip badly. So instead of experimenting, I thought I'd ask. Google says it's supposed to be exactly what I'm doing, but they do not work.

Try converting your videos using Handbrake, Xvid4PSP, Badaboom, or some other program with an Xbox360 profile.

Krunk, here's a list I found:
http://support.xbox.com/support/en/u...aybackFAQ.aspx

But from what you say you encoded it in, it should work?... All else fails, try one of the other supported codecs or try a smaller resolution. I would bet that trying a different codec would produce better results though, as I used to have similar problems on my original Xbox and Xbox Media Center. XBMC's .mkv playback was supported, but was pretty bad and produced similar effects... But .wmv and .avi worked fine.

In this case you're already using .avi, so I'd suggest (as much as I'd like not to) trying .wma. Otherwise I'd just try tversity, as others claim to have great success (both here, and other places I've visited).

I agree with this.

I wish Xbox 360 had better support, piece of crap.

One thing you can try, is turning down the Video output resolution on the 360. If I have mine set to 1080i and try to stream a non HD video from my PC it will have hang-ups during the movie (like buffering on youtube) but if the 360 isnt trying to up-convert the video to 1080i it plays flawless, such as set to 720i or 720p. Your encoding is probably perfectly fine and it is the 360 up-convert that is causing it to fall behind.
