Another budget gaming rig..

Thread Starter
Please help me, I'm slowing driving myself insane. I have changed my Newegg shopping cart 10 times and it needs to stop.

This will be a gaming rig, right now I have a 19" monitor but would like to upgrade that to at least a 22" HD in the future. This only needs to be a partial build as I already have a case (cm stacker), sound card (audigy2) and hard drive (250gb sata).

I am trying to keep the component total at or below $600.

Here is what I have managed to come up with so far:

CPU: e5200 (this is the only thing I'm fairly confident on)

Motherboard: ASUS P5E or GA-EP45T-UD3P or ASUS P5Q Pro (I've seen the P5Q Pro go for 69.99 openbox on newegg but I'm struggling between P45 or x38 chipsets)

Video Card: HD4890 vs HD4870 1gb vs HD4850x2 2gb (this is driving me nuts... do I go 4870 and plan for x-fire in the future or stick with a single 4890 which would change which chipset I get...)

RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066

Heatsink: XIGMATEK HDT-S1283

Power Supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W or CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W (I think 650 is enough unless I go x-fire)

What do you guys think? What would be the optimal setup? Thanks.

You get an A+ for the CPU / GPU / RAM / Heatsink / PSU choices

As for the motherboard - the P45 is a solid chipset - i've not dont much research on the x38 but it is a newer chipset. You may want to let some other members input their thoughts about the motherboard.

Also, i'm not an ATi user so I'm not familiar with the specs.

Other than that - nice job so far!

Great CPU, Solid ram and PSU and a nice CPU cooler.

**EDIT: Oh yeah, go with the 750TX - go with more than you think you'll need. It wont hurt and will put less stress on the PSU over time.

Cool thanks for the input. The real difference between the P45 and x38/x48 chipsets is the Pci-e 2.0 16x/16x (x38/x48) and 16x/8x. Ive seen some benchmarks that show some serious FPS gains in crossfire with 16x/16x and others that say its a +5% gain at best.

I guess I need to decide if I want to go with a single card or x-fire. Will I be happy with a single 4870? I'm dying to play Crysis, Farcry 2 and Stalker and want to get the most FPS for my dollar.

I could be wrong but people have said that the GTX 260 is better bang for your buck than the HD 4870.
Nice choice of parts man. I like all your choices, in the MOBO decision, I'd say get the cheaper board from teh X38 or the P45, both are great OCers.
And on Graphic Cards, it depends if you want to Xfire in the Future, If not, on newegg.com, they have refurbished GTX 260 core 216 for 169 free shipping, or if you decide for the HD 4890, instead of that get a GTX 275 or a refurbed GTX 280, which is 269 free shipping.
On the PSU, get the 750, it is nveer wrong to ahve too much power.
Good Luck

Ok this is my build based on suggestions. I went with the GTX 260 and decided I would not go with an SLI/X-fire rig. My build came out under what I was budgeting for which is awesome. Will I be happy with this? Like I said I am eager to play some of the more graphic intensive games out there.

The only thing im considering is swaping the GTX 260 for either the GTX 280 or the 4980...

I really like the low cost option but the 4890 option is tempting unless my spouse lays the smack down as I am going a little over what I told her ($500). I think the 4890 is a better deal then the GTX 280 (refurb is 269.99).

What do you think my FPS gain will be on the 4890 vs the GTX 260. The only real advantage to the ATI rig is xfire as possible upgrade option (but then I would need a differnt mb so i would have to add $20 to the total for a P5E).

Oh and what about the 650watt PSU? Shaving $25 off my total would be pretty nice.

I wouldn't consider going GTX 280 unless you find a deal that makes it cheaper than the GTX 275, since they perform about the same.

Also, if you're willing to invest the premium to get a video card at that price point, why don't you keep the 260 (which can be had for 170-175 on newegg....lots of deals there, no need to point out any specifics) and spend the premium on a better CPU like an E7400 or 8400 (or a low end intel quad, but those aren't as good for gaming).

Bigwooly: Please post whatever you got. Unless my income changes drastically in the near future this will be my only rig for a while so any way to get more bang for my buck would be greatly appreciated!

PsikyoJebus: I was planing to push the e5200 to 3.5, would a e7400 really give me that much of a increase in fps?
