How to tell if a CPU is broken?

Thread Starter
what are the signs on a broken CPU? Will the motherboard bleep? Will the PC freeze up on boot screen (motherboard screen)?

Also how can you tell if your temp sensor is broken on the CPU?

thank you everyone for reading and helping.

it wont post if it is busted, as for a broken temp sensor, it wont move at all, or move very little when the others ones will.

It won't boot at all if the CPU is broken.

In Realtemp is a sensor test to test your CPU temp sensor.

If a cpu is dead you wont even get the power supply to power on. If it's burnt out you normally see a burn mark on the chip.

I don't know about broken cpu but it probably won't boot at all! Or get into a restart loop.

About the sensor ; if it doesn't change at all under load or idle then it's broken.

Just to combine wht the previous 2 posts say. A broken cpu will not let the motherboard POST (make the beep sound). However, a cpu with a broken thermal sensor will boot fine, but the temperatures read off it will never change regardless of what happens.

Edit: WOAH, in the time I typed this post, 2 more posts were submitted.

Lots of different signs, if it's completely dead you probably will get nothing but fans and lights when you try to boot it up.

If you can boot and everything seems okay, random reboots, or certain BSOD's (if you're using Windows can tip you off). Say if you get CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT a few times, there's a very good chance your CPU is going.

I suppose the only way to really tell is to get an identical processor from a friend hopefully and try it out. Is there any specific issue you're having or need advice with?

Stuck temp sensor, as said before is pretty obvious, if you boot up CoreTemp or RealTemp and notice that even under heavy load for all cores, one seems to be not changing, it's probably dead. Unless it's temp is really high compared to the others, then you might just have to re-seat your heatsink
